The 2023 vintage for dry wines from Portugal is excellent, with a score of 91. The wines are still young and can develop slowly.

Specialties abound. Portugal isn't traditionally the most obvious wine country. Fortunately, Portuguese wines are increasingly putting themselves on the map, thanks to renowned wineries like Terra d'Alter. This Portuguese red wine is truly special. The Alfrocheiro is a grape that was practically extinct. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and attention to produce beautiful wines from it, partly due to the fact that this grape doesn't tolerate mold well. Therefore, attention is essential. At Terra d'Alter, they decided to give it a try, and we're so glad they did. This red wine from Portugal is one in a million, as you don't find it very often.

Dynamic winemaker for Terra d'Alter

Terra d'Alter is located in the Alto Alentejo region of southern Portugal, where the history of viticulture dates back to Roman times. This extensive history, and a focus that remains largely on indigenous Portuguese varietals, is combined with the New World expertise of the dynamic and enterprising winemaker Peter Bright, an Australian winemaker in Portugal since 1982.

What does this red Terra d'Alter ALF Alfrocheiro taste like?

The Alfrocheiro has characteristics of Syrah and, for example, a Touriga Nacional. However, the Terra d'Alter Alfrocheiro is soft and easier to drink. Use your nose and it's delightful. You'll clearly smell blackberries and cherries. A pleasant aroma. The taste is sublime. You'll taste dark fruit: black cherries, dried plums, and a hint of mulberry. But the spices certainly also play a leading role in this phenomenal red wine from Terra d'Alter. They tingle wonderfully on the tongue. The tannins are incredibly soft. Surprising but pleasant. We love it. But we do regret that this unknown grape variety isn't widely planted. So enjoy this Terra d'Alter Alfrocheiro twice as much, because you're holding a truly special bottle of Portuguese wine in your hands.
