Charles Smith founded the American winery Charles Smith in 1999 during a road trip to Walla Walla, where he met a winemaker who inspired him to start making wine himself. The winery is best known for its premium wines from Washington State, which regularly receive awards both domestically and internationally. Charles Smith produces a wide range of wines, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. The character of Charles Smith's wines is bold and expressive, with a strong focus on the Washington State terroir. Charles Smith employs an innovative and unconventional approach to winemaking, believing that passion, creativity, and respect for the grapes and the terroir are the keys to success. This results in wines with a unique character and remarkable expressiveness. The vines for this Riesling wine were planted in 1998 near the Columbia River. The vines are situated behind steep cliffs and are therefore well protected. The soil consists of basalt and limestone, weathered rock from the last ice age, which is rich in minerals and quickly drains rainwater to deeper layers. When the grapes are optimally ripe, they are carefully harvested and brought to the winery. Here, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The temperature during vinification was controlled to ensure that the grapes' aromas and flavors were preserved.
