What is Rioja wine?

Rioja wine comes from the Rioja region in northern Spain and includes both red and white wines . Red Rioja is primarily made from Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. White Rioja comes primarily from Viura, often supplemented with Tempranillo Blanco or Garnacha Blanca. Rioja is known for its aging classifications: Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. These indicate the amount of barrel and bottle aging a wine has undergone, thus determining its style.

Origin and vineyards

Rioja lies along the Ebro River and is divided into three sub-zones, each with its own climate, soil and style.

Rioja Alta
• High altitude and cooler, with calcareous soils
• Elegant, fresh wines with a long lifespan

Rioja Alavesa
• Temperate climate and calcareous clay
• Fine tannins, aromatic complexity and refinement

Rioja Oriental (formerly Baja)
• Warmer and drier
• Richer, fuller and fruit-driven

The region combines Atlantic and Mediterranean influences with a wide range of altitudes, ranging from 300 to over 700 meters. Old vines and traditional bush vines are common, contributing to concentration and depth.

Styles and vinification

Rioja produces a wide range of red and white styles with distinct differences in maturation.

Red Rioja

Young / Roble

• Fruit-driven, young, little or no wood
• Red fruit, soft tannins

Crianza

• Minimum 2 years of maturation, of which 1 year in barrel
• Balance between fruit, herbs and soft wood tones

Reserve

• Minimum 3 years of maturation, of which 1 year in barrel and 6 months in bottle
• Complex, spicy and structured

Great Reserve

• Minimum 5 years of maturation, of which 2 years in barrel and 2 years in bottle
• Deep, developed and very suitable for long-term storage

Modern Riojas often use French oak for finesse; traditional Riojas are aged longer in American oak, which can impart notes of vanilla and coconut.

White Rioja (Viura and blends)

White wines from Rioja have experienced strong growth in quality in recent years.

• Viura forms the basis
• Styles range from fresh and fruity to complex and barrel-aged
• More and more premium wines with longer maturation on large wood or concrete
• Aroma profiles of citrus, pear, white flowers and subtle spiciness

Rioja rosado

Rosé plays a smaller but growing role:
• Usually from Garnacha
• Fresh, light and modern in style

Storage and serving

Red Rioja

• Young: 2–4 years
• Crianza: 4–8 years
• Reserve: 6–12 years
• Gran Reserva: 10–20+ years

Serve at 16–18 degrees and decant younger or firmly structured style wines.

White Rioja

• Fresh / young: 2–4 years
• Barrel-matured / premium: 5–10+ years
Serve at 8–10 degrees.
