Vintage Report
2023 was een goed oogstjaar voor Puglia, gekenmerkt door warme en droge omstandigheden. Dit resulteerde in rijpe druiven met geconcentreerde smaken, wat wijnen met veel karakter opleverde.
Personally discovered by our oenologists during a special trip we were privileged to embark on to the wine cellars of Italy: the characteristic Puglia region. Our oenologists flew early in the morning to the bustling port city of Bari to explore this region. Once we arrived at our destination, Taranto, we arrived just in time for an aperitif. Plopped down in a chair in the most authentic "trattoria," we asked for the finest wine in Puglia. Varvaglione Susumaniello Rosso was opened and poured. As soon as the pure juice touched our lips, we knew immediately: we were truly in Italy!
The wines of Varvaglione
Our original goal for this trip was to discover new wines. We knew immediately that we had to visit the Varvaglione winery to explore its history. The appointment was made, and the next morning we set off. After a short drive, the winery loomed into view. Several towers, clearly showing the influence of the Arabs and Moors, elegantly adorn the horizon. Anna, almost a relative of Varvaglione, warmly welcomed us on the cypress-lined driveway and oleander-filled flower boxes. We can't hide our enthusiasm for Varvaglione Susumaniello Rosso. Anna tells us that Susumaniello was nearly extinct in Puglia, but that several renowned wineries, including Varvaglione, have revived it. Winemaker and owner Cosimo Varvaglione has personally championed the development of Susumaniello, and we can finally enjoy the first harvest.Impressions of Varvaglione Susumaniello Rosso
Back in the Varvaglione tasting cellar, Anna lets us taste Varvaglione Susumaniello Rosso again. With the story behind it, the wine seems to taste even better. It has an incredible amount of complexity and flavor. It seems as if with every sip, a new palette of flavors is presented to your taste buds. Aromas of plum and cherry jam form a base, with different nuances gradually adding to it. Cherry candy, vanilla, and even a hint of marzipan. Roasted coffee beans on the finish add a nice kick. A true personal favorite that makes our oenologists incredibly happy. Perhaps one of the best wines from all of Puglia.Product details
