Vintage Report

The 2018 vintage for Barolo received an excellent score of 92 points from Robert Parker. The wines from this year are generally still youthful, tannic, and need time to reach their full potential.
Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis is a barrel-aged red wine made from the Nebbiolo varietal by the Cavallotto winery in the DOCG Barolo region. The Nebbiolo grapes for this Barolo come from various plots in Bricco Boschis, part of Barolo, including the historic 'Punto Marcello' and 'Colle Sud-Ovest'. These are hilly vineyards with west, southwest, southeast, or south exposures.

The Italian family business Cavallotto

Cavallotto is a family winery located in one of Northern Italy's most important wine regions, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto, in the province of Cuneo. They have been cultivating vineyards since 1928, and their winemaking tradition goes back generations. Today, the fourth generation carries on the legacy, and they vinify only grapes grown on the legendary Bricco Boschis hill. The grapes come from vines with an average age of over 40 years, situated on Helvetian sandstone soils at an altitude of approximately 350 meters. They cultivate varieties of the noble Nebbiolo varietal, limiting yields to 38 hectoliters per hectare, and their work is all certified organic and environmentally friendly. Once the grapes reach optimal ripeness, they are harvested by hand.

The vinification of Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis

The grapes are then destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 29 degrees Celsius. The "cap" (the skins that float to the surface) is regularly immersed, and the juice is regularly pumped over. This gives the wine more color, tannin, and flavor. The total maceration time is 30 to 35 days. The wine is aged for 36 to 42 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 20, 30, 50, 80, and 100 hectoliters. The wine then remains in the bottle for a further 6 months before release. On the nose, this Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis offers hints of ripe cherries, licorice, and raspberries. It has a powerful flavor, yet elegant Barolo with soft tannins, ripe fruit, and earthy notes.
