The history of Languedoc-Roussillon
Languedoc-Roussillon has a rich history, having been brought to its attention by the Greeks 2,600 years ago. The Romans followed suit, expanding the area even further. Besides grapes, olives were also cultivated here, used to produce olive oil. In the following years, the region continued to grow, both in quality and quantity. Here too, phylloxera caused serious damage. By 1868, most of the vineyards had been destroyed. The reconstruction took a long time, and Languedoc-Roussillon was gradually rebuilt. The last 20 years, in particular, have been entirely dominated by restructuring.
