The Jura wine region

The French wine region of Jura may not be the most famous, but it is one of the oldest. Situated in the French Alps, it produces some of the country's most exceptional wines. These are unique wines with their own distinct style, produced not for commercial purposes, but truly for wine lovers themselves.

The mountainous Jura region

The wine region lies between Burgundy and the Swiss border, in the foothills of the Jura Mountains. The mountainous terrain ranges from plains and plateaus to soaring peaks. Jura is Latin for forest, and that is precisely what characterizes this wine region. The climate is therefore equally diverse. Winters can be very cold, while summers can be exceptionally hot. Because of this, many wineries choose to plant their grapes high in the mountains. Compared to its history, little remains of the once-vast vineyard area. Initially, the Jura encompassed approximately 20,000 hectares of vineyards. Unfortunately, the phylloxera plague changed that. It devastated the area, and now only 1,850 hectares remain. Despite the significant reduction in size, the quality has improved significantly.

The grape varieties from the Jura

The Jura wine region boasts grape varieties found nowhere else. The white Savagnin Blanc and the red Poulsard and Trousseau, for example. Burgundy grapes are also widely planted. Wines are also produced from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. However, these are not comparable to those from Burgundy. The soil here is primarily limestone, but some vineyards also use marl. Marl has a distinct influence on the wine, giving it a distinctive character that makes Jura wines so unique. Take, for example, the Domaine Rolet Arbois Chardonnay. Chardonnay grapes are grown high in the mountains, resulting in a wine with fresh and fruity aromas. The flavor is juicy with delicious fruity notes and just the right amount of depth.

Distinctive wines from the Jura

The most famous wine from the Jura region is Vin Jaune. This sherry-like wine is made from Savagnin grapes, harvested as late as possible and vinified in a unique way. Domaine Rolet's Savignin wine is a beautiful, fruity example of this Jura wine. The aroma reveals white flowers and citrus fruits. This white wine has a refreshing taste with an incredible amount of fruit. The oak aging gives the wine just the right boost. But you can also find red wines in this French wine region. They produce both blended wines and single-varietal wines. Discover the Jura region with our wines from the Arbois region in the Jura region and be surprised by the distinctive flavors.
