Silva Reis 10 Years Old Tawny Port
Silva Reis 10 Years Old Tawny Port is a soft, matured Port for desserts, cheese, and moments when you are looking for more than just sweetness. The house selects finely aged Ports intended for the 10-year blend, giving the wine significantly more spice, nuttiness, and depth than a young tawny. What is 10 Years Old Tawny Port? It is a wood-aged Tawny Port from multiple vintages, with an official age designation within Port.
Vineyards and Region
Its origin lies in the Douro, the classic and legally demarcated cradle of Port.
- Location / Origin: Port can only come from the Douro, in Northern Portugal. This firmly places this wine in one of Europe's most historic wine regions.
- Climate & Influences: The Douro experiences hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters, in a distinctly mountainous landscape. This helps to produce grapes with great concentration and ripeness, precisely what works well for wood-aged Port.
Vinification and Aging
Here, everything revolves around barrel aging and the careful blending of a balanced mix.
- Aging / Wood Maturation: This Tawny is created from a selection of the finest Ports that have been barrel-aged for the 10-year blend. During this wood maturation, the profile shifts from young fruit to softer notes of spices, nuts, licorice, vanilla, and fruit compote.
Grape Composition
The blend is classic Douro, with old mixed plantings as a base and a clear role for the traditional Port grapes.
- Vinhas Velhas Field Blend – Douro: Old mixed plantings give the wine extra layers and a broader, more complex base.
- Touriga Franca – Douro: Touriga Franca gives the blend suppleness and aromatic depth.
- Tinta Roriz – Douro: Tinta Roriz supports the structure and the spicy core of the wine.
- Tinta Barroca – Douro: Tinta Barroca helps shape the soft and rounded character of this tawny.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
Tawny in color with golden reflections. In the aroma and taste, this Port shows ripe fruit, spices, and clear aging notes, in a soft and harmonious structure that remains both fresh and complex. The finish is round, mild, and beautifully developed.
- Serving Temperature: 16 °C works best here, as the wine then fully reveals its ripe fruit, spiciness, and soft texture.
- Dishes: Tarte Tatin and Pudim Abade de Priscos pair beautifully with this, as this tawny has enough softness and maturity for rich, sweet desserts.
More Information about Silva Reis
The Silva Reis family has been connected to the Port world for 4 generations. Within Real Companhia Velha, Manuel da Silva Reis, in particular, played an important role in expanding the Douro holdings in the post-war period and specifically selecting the best plots for Port. This fits well with a house that still builds on historical precision, knowledge of origin, and long aging today.
