Vintage Report

The 2023 vintage in South Africa is excellent, with a score of 90, although the wines still show a youthful character. The cool sea breeze helped to optimally preserve the natural acidity and pure fruit character.
In their search for the best Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this Blanc Barrel Fermented, the winemakers sought grapes that would produce a fuller, more rounded mouthfeel. Thanks to the cool climate and warm daytime sun, the Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the Constantia region were able to ripen optimally. The grapes were harvested at perfect ripeness, and this white Barrel Fermented wine was produced with the utmost care.

A unique Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Fermented from Steenberg

Steenberg boasts the distinction of being the oldest farm in the picturesque Constantia Valley, widely considered South Africa's premier wine region. Founded in 1682 by Catharina Ras, the estate was then called Swaaneweide, named after the numerous Spoorwiek geese that inhabit it. With its cool, ocean-facing slopes and majestic granite ridges, this vineyard has built a global reputation for producing excellent Cape wines. The estate boasts a state-of-the-art winery, which produces some of the country's finest award-winning wines. A unique Sauvignon Blanc made from carefully selected vineyards on the Constantia estate. The vines have an average age of 10 to 23 years. The fresh coastal wine provides the necessary cooling for the vines, allowing the grapes to retain acidity alongside their pure fruit character. The Steenberg winemakers strive for a Sauvignon Blanc with a fuller and more rounded mouthfeel. The wine is fermented and aged in a combination of large French oak barrels for nine months.

The special Steenberg terroir in this Sauvignon Blanc

The terroir is immediately apparent in the glass. A pale white-gold color with a light green hue around the rim. The aroma reveals nettles, white blossom, fresh asparagus, and gooseberries. These notes also emerge beautifully on the palate. This Sauvignon Blanc is rich and unctuous, balanced with lively acidity. The oak aging imparts a subtle spiciness and elegant structure. A wine that lingers on the palate, completing the tasting experience. This wine is enhanced by pairing dishes such as shellfish, a Thai curry accented with ginger and lemongrass, a savory tart tatin, or grilled calamari.
