Telmo Rodríguez Gaba do Xil O Barreiro 2024 D.O. Valdeorras, Spain
Telmo Rodríguez Gaba do Xil O Barreiro 2024 is a white Valdeorras with a much clearer focus on origin than on a broad, general grape style. This wine comes entirely from O Barreiro, a restored vineyard in Larouco, and is made from its own grapes, with Godello as the supporting base and lees aging for extra texture. It is precisely this combination of plot, clayey slate soils, and an Atlantic climate with continental influence that gives this wine its clean lines, length, and refined tension.
Vineyards and region
This wine is all about O Barreiro in the south of Valdeorras.
- Location / Origin: O Barreiro is located in Larouco, within D.O. Valdeorras in Galicia. This part of the region combines Atlantic freshness with a more continental character, giving the wine a nice balance between tension and ripeness.
- Soil: The vineyard is on clayey slate soils. This subsoil provides structure and contributes to the wine's long, balanced development.
- Climate & influences: The 2024 vintage was warm and stable, without extreme heat, but with a lot of moisture in winter and spring. This caused disease pressure and lower yields, while careful work in the vineyard brought the grapes healthy towards harvest.
- Vineyard & harvest: O Barreiro covers 20 ha, of which 16 ha are planted with white varieties and 4 ha with red varieties. Traditional methods are used, and the grapes are harvested by hand in small crates.
Vinification and aging
The cellar approach here remains deliberately precise and restrained, so that the vineyard remains central.
- Harvest & Selection: Manual picking in small crates helps to get the fruit intact and carefully into the cellar.
- Fermentation: Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts. This fits well with a wine that relies heavily on origin and plot character.
- Aging / Wood aging: After fermentation, the wine ages on its lees for several months. This gives extra texture, more cohesion, and a longer, refined structure in the glass.
Grape composition
Godello forms the core of this wine, supplemented with local grapes from the same vineyard.
- Godello – Valdeorras: Godello forms the supporting base and gives the wine its structure, tension, and length.
- Local grapes – Valdeorras: The supplementary local varieties provide additional nuance and help to anchor the wine more strongly in its origin.
Tasting notes and serving tips
In the glass, you taste a white Valdeorras with clear tension, refined texture, and a long, clean line. The lees aging provides extra roundness and cohesion, while the combination of Godello, clayey slate, and fresh influences from its origin keeps the whole precise and balanced. This is a well-cared-for, serious white wine with length and great focus.
- Serving temperature: 10–12 °C works best here, as this range preserves the tension and fresh line while simultaneously allowing enough space for the wine's texture.
- Dishes: Grilled white fish, shellfish, refined rice dishes, and light dishes with creamy sauces pair particularly well here.
More information about Telmo Rodríguez
Within Telmo Rodríguez's work, the focus has been for years on restoring historical vineyards and re-highlighting forgotten origins. In Valdeorras too, the emphasis is on old plots, local grapes, and traditional vineyard work, so that the wine is not driven by technique or volume, but by place and character. It is precisely this approach that gives O Barreiro its convincing unique character.
