Portia Valpreciado Roble 2023 Ribera del Duero, Spain
Valpreciado Roble 2023 clearly shows how modern Ribera del Duero can be, with dark fruit, fresh tension, and just enough oak to add depth to the wine without overpowering the fruit. This red wine is made from Tempranillo and undergoes a short aging period in oak, keeping it smooth and approachable while clearly having more complexity than a completely unoaked profile. The term on the label is also relevant in terms of content. What does Roble mean in Spanish wine? It means the wine is aged briefly in oak, in this case for a minimum of 3 months.
Vineyards and region
The origin of this wine lies in a high-altitude part of Ribera del Duero where freshness and ripeness remarkably come together.
- Location / Origin: The terroir here revolves around Finca La Encina in Gumiel del Mercado, within the so-called Golden Triangle of Ribera del Duero. This places this wine in one of the strongest zones of the appellation.
- Altitude: The vineyard is located at an altitude of over 850 m. In this part of Ribera del Duero, summer days remain more moderate and nights cool, which helps preserve freshness and aromatic tension in the fruit.
- Exposure: The plots are located on a hill with a north-south orientation. This gives the vines balanced sun exposure and supports even ripening.
- Vineyard & Harvest: The wine comes from a plot exclusively planted with Tempranillo and is sustainably cultivated, with great attention to respecting nature and the vineyard environment.
Vinification and aging
The cellar approach here is deliberately focused on fruit, suppleness, and a short oak influence that gives the wine a bit more shape.
- Aging / Oak Maturation: Roble here stands for a short barrel aging of at least 3 months in oak. This gives the wine softness, toast, and some extra roundness, while the grape character and fresh fruit notes remain clearly visible.
- Alcohol percentage: With 14% alcohol, this Ribera del Duero has enough power to beautifully carry its fruit, structure, and oak influence.
Grape composition
This wine is built entirely on one grape, exactly as you would expect from a young, fruit-driven Ribera del Duero.
- Tempranillo – Ribera del Duero: Tempranillo forms the complete base and gives the wine its dark color, fresh red and black fruit notes, and its round, well-integrated tannin structure.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Clear dark red in the glass, with a purple rim and an intense nose of fresh fruit and clear toasted notes from the barrel. On the palate, this Roble is structured and smooth, with round tannins, balance, and abundant fruit, complemented by spices and a subtle hint of toasted wood. The finish is medium-long and remains beautifully fresh and spicy.
- Serving temperature: 15–16 °C works best here, as this range allows the dark fruit to open up while keeping the toast, spices, and tannins in beautiful balance.
- Dishes: Meat dishes, mushrooms, ham, tuna, cod, aged cheese, rice, and pasta pair very naturally with this, as the wine has enough freshness and suppleness to complement both savory and slightly richer flavors well.
