Vintage Report

The 2020 vintage in the Castilla y León region received an excellent rating of 94 points. The wines from this year are described as excellent, but are currently still youthful and tannic.
What a beautiful 1.5-liter bottle of the renowned Matsu El Picaro wine! This large 1.5-liter bottle is also called a Magnum and comes packaged in a beautiful, original gift box. A perfect gift; the bottle alone is dazzling. Matsu's success story begins with the Vintae winery. Miguel Arambarri took it over from his parents in 1999. He invested heavily, replanted vineyards, and built a modern winery, which quickly led to resounding success. The wines received high praise from the international wine press, marking the beginning of Matsu wines. Meanwhile, José Miguel and Ricardo's sons are also active in the vineyards, and each member of the family has their own wine and label. This red wine, called El Picaro, is Matsu's youngest wine, rich and full-bodied, and very drinkable.

The harvest of the Tinto de Torro

The Tinto de Torro grape has conquered the family and is the leading grape in Matsu wines. The bunches grow in the Spanish wine region of Toro, located northwest of Madrid on the Duero River and has held DO recognition since 1987. During the family's search, they came across a vineyard that is a century old. This ancient vineyard also nourishes this red Matsu El Picaro, and you can taste its presence. Allowing the grapes to savour in peace is very important to the family. This is also where the wine's name comes from, as Matsu means "patient balance" in Japanese. The bunches are harvested by hand when they are perfectly ripe and transported to Matsu in crates.

Wood aging for the Matsu El Picaro Magnum

After pressing, this Matsu El Picaro Magnum is aged in wood for a full three months. These three months impart a wealth of power and balance to this top-notch wine. Why is this Magnum perfect? Well, it matures perfectly in the bottle. Because this bottle holds 1.5 liters, it matures and develops even more beautifully in the bottle. As soon as the cork is removed, we see a bright ruby red color with a beautiful purple sheen. Our senses are stimulated, giving our nose time to absorb all the beautiful qualities. We noted nuances of blueberry, blackberry, a touch of vanilla, and some mineral notes. On the palate, it offers a very fine sensation, with plenty of black fruit, including cherries and blackberries, accompanied by a considerable spiciness. On the back of the tongue, it reflects the beautiful Spanish tradition with vanilla, cedar, plums, and a touch of black pepper. The finish is soft and refined with plenty of black fruit.
