Vintage Report
The 2023 vintage in Galicia received a score of 92 points from Robert Parker. This indicates excellent quality that is accessible and drinkable early.
Martin Codax is one of those wineries that just keeps on giving. You simply can't get enough of this high-flyer from Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Especially when it comes to the beloved Albarino, they are true artists, filling many a wine cellar. With this new crown jewel, Anxo Martín Ribeiro Blanco, they reveal a new side of Galicia, or Rias Biaxas. A subtle blend where, alongside the popular Albarino, the soft Godello and the lesser-known Trajadura have also secured a place. We're absolutely crazy about it.
The wines of Martin Codax
Martin Codax is an intensive partnership between several small winegrowers in Galicia. It was only founded in the mid-1980s and therefore has a relatively short history. However, the winery is flourishing. Originally with just 20 hectares, it now encompasses around 240 hectares. Viticulture in this part of Spain is a challenge, however. No sunny days like on the Costa, but plenty of rain and much cooler temperatures. Anxo Martin Ribeiro Blanco is based on the myth of Anxo Martín, a half-man/half-fish who guarded his treasures in the Miño River. Only at night, when the moon shines, does he emerge from the water, take on his human form, and seduce the inhabitants of the village of San Juan. The harvest of Anxo Martin Ribeiro Blanco grapes is largely based on this myth, as they are also picked at night.Impressions of Anxo Martin Ribeiro Blanco
The interplay of the three grapes reaches its peak the moment you pour the wine into the glass. Plenty of intensity from the firm fruit, yellow plums, and a hint of white flowers. The acidity on the palate is present, yet restrained. Even the novice wine drinker will readily recognize hints of magnolia, fennel, rosemary, and green apple. All this concludes with a generous minerality on the finish, making Anxo Martin Ribeiro Blanco a typical Rías Baixas.Product details
