Abadía Retuerta Cuvée Palomar
Abadía Retuerta Cuvée Palomar comes from a historic estate in Castilla y León where the winemaking tradition dates back more than eight centuries. Located on the famous Golden Mile along the Duero River, the estate is led by oenologist Ángel Anocíbar, who strives to create wines that express the estate's personality. Since 2022, Abadía Retuerta has even held its own Protected Designation of Origin, Abadía Retuerta DOP, underscoring the estate's special status. What kind of wine is Abadía Retuerta Cuvée Palomar? It's a powerful, oak-aged blend of Spanish and international grape varieties with an elegant texture and a distinct gastronomic character.
Vineyards and region
Abadía Retuerta Cuvée Palomar comes from Spain, from Castilla y León, in the Ribera del Duero region. The estate's vineyards are situated along the Duero River on high terraces, where the river and the surrounding hills provide cool shade at night. The estate is part of the prestigious strip known as the Golden Mile, where several top estates are concentrated. The climate is continental with warm summers and cold winters, resulting in grapes with high concentration and robust acidity. In this environment, Abadía Retuerta can work plot by plot, selecting the grapes that best suit the style of Cuvée Palomar.
Vinification and maturation
Abadía Retuerta Cuvée Palomar is an expressive blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, and Malbec. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, a long period that creates structure, complexity, and a fine integration of fruit and woody aromas. The extended oak aging gives the wine additional depth and aging potential, while maintaining its elegant texture. With 14.5% alcohol, 14g/l residual sugar, and 5.22g/l acidity, this is a ripe, full-bodied style with enough freshness to remain balanced at the table.
Grape composition
Tempranillo – Abadía Retuerta
Tempranillo forms the base of the blend and brings dark red fruit, firmness and the recognisable backbone you expect from a wine from the Duero Valley.
Garnacha – Abadía Retuerta
Garnacha adds riper red fruit and juiciness, giving the wine not only power but also an inviting, round character.
Graciano – Abadía Retuerta
Graciano provides extra freshness, aromatic tension and a spicy note that gives the wine more depth in aroma and taste.
Malbec – Abadía Retuerta
Malbec enhances the colour and structure and contributes to the concentrated, soft tannins and long finish.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Abadía Retuerta Cuvée Palomar has a vibrant purple color in the glass. The nose reveals intense aromas of red fruit like raspberry and strawberry, complemented by spicy notes of licorice. On the palate, the wine is highly aromatic, with a delicate and elegant texture that beautifully balances its concentration. The fresh finish ensures that, despite its power, the wine remains lively and refined. Serve this red wine at around 16 to 18°C (60 to 64°F) with dishes such as sirloin steak or tenderloin, refined game dishes, complex charcuterie, or Spanish tapas with a sweet and spicy note.
