With over 36 percent of the grapes planted, Gruner Veltliner can rightly be called the pride of the country. These wines have a vibrant, pure, and fresh character. In the mid-20th century, there was also high demand for sweet wines, such as Trockenbeerenauslese, made in Austria. However, the World Wars put a stop to wine growing in Austria. Add to that the antifreeze affair and by the mid-1980s, Austrian wine exports were virtually zero.

However, Austria is climbing out of its proverbial trough. Thanks to this antifreeze scandal, Austria now has some of the strictest wine regulations in the world. This is paying off. The quality of Austrian wines is guaranteed and assured. Moreover, a new generation of winemakers is emerging. Winemakers with international experience.
