Benguela Cove Cuvée58 Brut

The name Cuvée58 refers to the 58 facets of a brilliant-cut diamond and matches the precise, refined style that Benguela Cove strives for with this Méthode Cap Classique. An elegant South African sparkling wine with enough tension for an aperitif and sufficient structure to also be served at the table.

All grapes are grown on Benguela Cove's own estate in Walker Bay, under the direct influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Location / Origin: The vineyards are located near the Benguela Cove lagoon in Walker Bay, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This distinct coastal location makes the estate one of South Africa's most maritime wine-growing sites.
  • Soil: Weathered shale and iron-rich laterite form the primary soil types, combined with a high calcium content. This combination provides a stony, well-draining base for the vines.
  • Climate & Influences: The nearby lagoon and Atlantic Ocean temper daytime temperatures, while nights cool down further. These large diurnal differences support even ripening and help maintain natural acidity.
  • Exposition: The plots used are located on south-east and south-west facing slopes. Maritime winds provide additional cooling and ventilation in the vineyard.

The working method is focused on a fine mousse, clear aromas, and sufficient texture without losing natural freshness.

What is Méthode Cap Classique? In this South African method, the mousse is created by a second fermentation in the bottle, followed by aging on the yeast cells.

  • Harvest & Selection: The grapes are hand-harvested during the cool morning and then sorted by hand. Whole clusters are processed carefully, and only the free-run juice of the highest quality is used.
  • Fermentation: 60% of the base wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. This rounds off the acids slightly and gives the wine more softness, while maintaining sufficient freshness and aromatic precision.
  • Aging: After blending and bottling, the second fermentation takes place in the bottle. The wine then remains in contact with the lees for 12 months, which refines the mousse and adds extra complexity and length to the mouthfeel.

For Cuvée58, Benguela Cove chooses a striking white blend in which aromatic freshness is combined with extra breadth and structure.

  • 79% Sauvignon Blanc – Walker Bay: Sauvignon Blanc forms the distinct base and brings vibrant acids, clear fruit, and the fresh aromatic tension that suits the cool coastal climate well.
  • 21% Chardonnay – Walker Bay: Chardonnay gives the blend extra volume and structure and supports the broader mouthfeel that develops during bottle aging.

More about Benguela Cove

Benguela Cove is located on the coast near Hermanus and came into the hands of entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE in 2013, who further developed the estate around viticulture, nature, and hospitality. The winery was opened in 2017 and, under the leadership of cellar master Johann Fourie, the emphasis is strongly placed on site-specific wines that let the cool, maritime character of Walker Bay speak for itself.
