Vintage Report

Bolla “Le Poiane” Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Classico

In 1950, Alberto Bolla's grandchildren bottled a special wine to celebrate his 80th birthday. What began as a family tribute became a milestone in the Italian wine world: the first commercially produced Amarone. To this day, this Le Poiane Amarone remains the icon of the Bolla house, with its powerful structure, refined aromas, and a history you can taste in every sip.

Vineyards and region – altitude, limestone and history

The vineyards are located in the Valpolicella Classico region, north of Verona. Here, the grapes benefit from a combination of chalky soils, cool nights, and sunny slopes at higher elevations. The vineyards are planted with vines averaging 25 years old. This ensures low yields and an intense, concentrated harvest. The name "Le Poiane" refers to the buzzards that circle above the vineyards.

Vinification and maturation – tradition in detail

After harvest, the grapes are dried naturally for several weeks to concentrate their sugars and aromas. Fermentation takes place with neutral yeasts, ensuring the grape's character remains prominent. Malolactic fermentation takes place partly in small French and American oak barriques and partly in large wooden vats. The final aging lasts 24 months in this combination of used barriques and large 7,000-liter barrels, for a perfect balance of wood, fruit, and spice.

Grape composition

100% Corvina and Corvinone.

Tasting notes

Deep garnet red in color. The aroma opens with ripe black cherries, figs, vanilla, and cedarwood. The palate is powerful and layered, with notes of cocoa, spices, dried fruits, and soft tannins. A long, warm finish with a velvety texture.

Serving suggestions

Perfect with game dishes, stews, red meat, or aged cheeses. Serve between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius for optimal expression.

Awards

  • James Suckling – 90 points : “Some sweetish dried red-fruit character follows through to a medium to full palate with a nice, fruity and lightly tannind finish. Drink now.”

  • De Grote Hamersma – 9+ : “Raisins, figs in coffee, dates in Marmite. Light acidity and firm tannins. A refined powerhouse.”
