Hugel refers to the hilly inland region of Rheinhessen. With the 100 Hugel wines, Wittmann presents a new series of wines with a unique character. In this series, winemaker Philipp is releasing a Silvaner, a Pinot Blanc, and a Riesling. The young vines are planted on a limestone vineyard, making them somewhat more accessible than the other wines in the range.

The vinification process of Wittmann 100 Hugel Riesling

The Wittmann family business is located in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. It's a remarkably successful winery, and winemaker and owner Philipp Wittmann has twice been named Germany's best winemaker. Founded in 1663, the winery is now run by the 15th generation. Since 1990, the company has been certified organic, making it a pioneer in Germany. His father, Günter Wittmann, had long since abandoned traditional viticultural practices and therefore switched to more environmentally friendly methods for cultivating his grapes. Nature clearly takes center stage at this winery. Strict grape selection results in low yields, but the result is pure quality. During the vinification process, only natural yeasts are used, meaning each vintage is slightly different. The grapes are carefully sorted and selected by hand to ensure only the very best remain. After gentle pressing, fermentation follows. Wittmann chooses to carry out this fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks or old oak barrels.

The 100 Hugel Riesling is pale yellow in color. The nose is delightfully fresh with aromas of peach and grapefruit. The palate is deliciously juicy with ripe acidity and notes of yellow fruit, melon, and pineapple. The finish is mineral and pleasantly long. A beautiful Riesling wine that makes an ideal aperitif or pairing with a summer salad.
