Von Winning produces the finest dry wines from the Palatinate. This Riesling Ozyetra, from the single vineyard of Pechstein, is one of them. The name of this wine refers to the famous Oesietra caviar and has become a powerful, elegant, and refined dry Riesling. Moreover, Von Winning Riesling Ozyetra is truly a wine in a class of its own: connoisseurs consider it perhaps the very best Riesling in the world.
Riesling from Von Winning Pechstein
In 1812, the winery was named Von Winning, after Captain Leopold von Winning, one of its owners. Eighty percent of the vineyards are planted with Riesling, making it the estate's most important grape. Von Winning is also a kind of artist with the Riesling grape; they know how to make successful wines with it. Each vineyard within the Von Winning estate imparts new and unique aromas to the Riesling. The grapes for Von Winning Riesling Ozyetra are planted on a small, exclusive Von Winning vineyard. The Pechstein vineyard is located in the village of Forst, just north of Deidesheim, and is considered the top vineyard in the Palatinate. The vineyards are therefore classified GroBe Lage, a high grand cru designation. The Pechstein terroir is particularly exceptional: basalt, sandstone, and loose loam create a unique flavor profile. After careful, hand-harvesting, the precious grapes are pressed and fermented in 500-liter wooden barrels.
