Vintage Report

The 2023 vintage for dry Portuguese wines has been rated 91 points by Robert Parker. This indicates excellent quality, with the wine still being somewhat youthful at present.
Pomares Douro Quinta Nova is the latest addition to the Pomares series. Despite being the newest wine, it's already a success! Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, a beautiful winery with a rich history spanning over 250 years. The beautiful and lengthy name alone makes us swoon over these delicious wines. Quinta Nova, as the winery is now popularly known, is located in the heart of the Douro Valley. Spanning 120 hectares and stretching 1.5 kilometers along the river's northern bank, this magnificent estate is home to the Amorim family. Since 1999, Quinta Nova has been in the cork trade for generations, making the transition to wine a logical next step. The fourth generation is now at the helm, bringing with it a wealth of innovation. Quinta Nova's wines are being elevated to an even higher level! A prime example is the Pomares series from Quinta Nova. Wines with a perfect price-quality ratio.

4 months of maturation in French oak

The wines from Quinta Nova's Pomares series owe their name to the orchards surrounding the Pomares vineyards. Pomares means "fruit orchards" in Portuguese. This Pomares Douro is made from three lesser-known but truly Portuguese grapes: Gouveio, Rabigato, and Viosinho. The climate in which these grapes grow is ideal. Winters are often cold and wet, allowing the soil to absorb plenty of moisture for the summer. This is essential, as the summers are incredibly hot and dry. Because the old, well-rooted vines can easily draw sufficient moisture from the soil. After a calm growing season, the winemaker of Pomares wines signals the start of the hand harvest. Each bunch is carefully assessed to determine whether it is good enough for this white Portuguese wine. Quinta Nova attaches great importance to the quality of its wines. After the harvest, the different varieties are pressed separately and fermented, after which the final, magnificent blend is created. For a perfect finish, part of this white wine is aged for 4 months in French oak barrels.

The taste of this Pomares Branco

Fortunately, we're now only a few steps away from savoring this Portuguese white wine. We carefully uncork the bottle. Delightful aromas are already emerging. Pouring the wine into the glass reveals a beautiful lemon-yellow color. On the nose, we noted aromas of apricot, gooseberry, white herbs, a pleasant minerality, and a light touch of oak. The palate is full and rich with hints of yellow fruit, gooseberry, and a touch of citrus at the finish. A bit of everything, really. This makes this white wine perfectly balanced with a pleasant body!
