The Heritage of Hugel in the Heart of Alsace

Since 1639, when the first Hugel settled in picturesque Riquewihr, Hugel has remained an unbroken family business. Today, Jean Philippe and Marc Hugel, representatives of the eleventh generation, continue the tradition. With over 25 hectares on Riquewihr's most coveted slopes and contracts for an additional 100 hectares of equally impressive quality, Hugel selects only hand-harvested grapes. These grapes, from vines with an average age of thirty years, benefit from Alsace's unique microclimate. Shielded by the Vosges Mountains and free from sea breezes, these grapes ripen slowly, giving Hugel Riesling its characteristic refinement and intensity.

The Careful Production of Hugel Riesling

The vines for Hugel Riesling are strategically placed on the steepest slopes, rich in complex minerals. Each grape is hand-picked and then carefully transported to the press, where gravity assists in the slow pressing process. Only the very best juice is selected for Hugel Riesling. After pressing, the must rests, after which the wine matures in barrels at eighteen degrees Celsius. After natural fining during the winter, the Hugel Riesling is lightly filtered and bottled in the spring, after which aging continues in the cellar.
