C. Kloss Sparkling Tea Bergkräuter, Germany

C. Kloss Sparkling Tea Bergkräuter perfectly illustrates how broad and serious non-alcoholic options can now be. What makes this Sparkling Tea different from many other non-alcoholic sparkling drinks? Not sweet fruit or simple freshness, but rather layers, subtle bitterness, herbaceous notes, and a dry, mature style that you would pair with a gourmet dish rather than mindlessly serving as a fresh alternative. This Bergkräuter combines smoky black tea, subtle herbaceousness, and refined bitterness into a sparkling drink with character and tension.

Origin and Style Vision

The Sparkling Tea Bergkräuter was developed in the Mosel, where Christian Kloss translated his experience with refined Sekt into a new non-alcoholic category.

  • Origin: The drink comes from C. Kloss's Sparkling Tea line, developed in the Mosel by Christian Kloss.

  • Genesis: In 2021, Kloss first bought a Sekt house in the Mosel, further improving its quality, and then decided to develop sparkling tea.

  • Collaboration: For the Sparkling Tea line, he collaborated with a leading German tea sommelier to create drinks with more character, depth, and balance.

  • Collection: The line now consists of 5 different Sparkling Teas, each with a distinct profile.

It is precisely this background in Sekt that gives this Bergkräuter a different approach than many non-alcoholic alternatives, as effervescence, tension, and finesse are clearly central here.

Structure and Character

The Bergkräuter is built around herbaceousness, bitterness, and refinement, without being harsh or rigid.

  • Colour: In the glass, this Sparkling Tea shows a cloudy amber colour, which immediately indicates a more layered and distinctive style.

  • Aroma Profile: The nose opens with apple, vegetal notes, and herbaceousness, followed by smoky black tea and a subtle green herbaceous undertone.

  • Structure: The style is dry and fresh-fruity, with subtle bitterness and a refined sweetness that integrates beautifully into the whole.

  • Bitterness: The bitterness is reminiscent of the slightly rough skin of a 'goudrenet' apple, very subtle but clearly present.

  • Style Perception: The impression remains sophisticated, refined, and elegant, with enough tension to remain gastronomically interesting.

  • Sustainability: The drink is positioned as local, sustainable, and contemporary, with an emphasis on quality and conscious production.

Composition and Flavour Direction

Black tea – foundational base
Black tea provides depth, light smokiness, and a mature mouthfeel here.

Mountain herbs – aromatic layer
The herbaceous component gives the drink tension, freshness, and a fine vegetal character without being overwhelming.

Apple notes – fruity nuance
The apple-like tone provides juiciness and familiarity, but is kept taut by the dry style and subtle bitterness.

Tasting Notes and Serving Tips

In the glass, C. Kloss Sparkling Tea Bergkräuter presents a cloudy amber hue, immediately distinguishing it from a classic sparkling drink. The nose opens with apple, vegetal notes, and herbaceousness, followed by smoky black tea and a subtle green herbaceous hint. On the palate, the style is dry, fresh-fruity, and refined, with subtle bitterness reminiscent of the skin of a 'goudrenet' apple. The structure remains sophisticated and elegant, with a subtle sweetness that beautifully balances the bitterness. The finish is refined, lightly herbaceous, and remarkably mature.

  • Serving temperature: Serve well chilled so that the fresh tension, subtle bitterness, and herbaceous nuances remain beautifully balanced.

  • Dishes: Very suitable as an aperitif, but also interesting with light dishes or refined combinations where herbaceousness and fresh bitterness complement well.

About Christian Kloss

Christian Kloss is the master behind the C. Kloss Sparkling Tea line, combining classic Sekt knowledge from the Mosel with a modern vision for non-alcoholic sparkling drinks. Together with a leading German tea sommelier, he developed a range of 5 Sparkling Teas, each with its own signature. The professional world quickly responded: in 2025, his Sparkling Tea Rosé received 96 points from Falstaff, and this Bergkräuter received 92 points from the Falstaff panel, which included Peter Moser, Benjamin Herzog, and Romana Echensperger. With this, Kloss confirms that non-alcoholic can also be refined, gastronomic, and distinctive at a high level.
