Maps and location
Vinho Verde is a protected Portuguese designation of origin in the northwest of the country, not the name of a grape, nor a synonym for the modern administrative region of Norte. The legally demarcated production area includes precisely designated municipalities and parishes in the districts of Braga, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Porto, Vila Real, and Viseu. Atlantic influence, shallow predominantly granitic soils, and local grapes explain the great variety: white, rosé, red, and sparkling.[1][2]
In the opening photo, grapevines grow in the green landscape of the Vinho Verde region.[3]
What exactly is Vinho Verde?
The official name is Denominação de Origem Vinho Verde, or the Vinho Verde designation of origin. Within the European Union, it is registered as a protected designation of origin. The name thus refers to origin and production rules, not automatically to color, youthfulness, or carbonation. The protected categories include wine, sparkling wine, and quality sparkling wine; still Vinho Verde can be white, rosé, or red.[4]
The production area of the separate geographical indication Minho (IG Minho) coincides with that of the designation of origin, but different legal rules apply to both indications. For wine bearing the name Vinho Verde, the product specification and certification of the Comissão de Viticultura da Região dos Vinhos Verdes (CVRVV), the regional wine commission, apply.[5]
Where is the DO Vinho Verde located?
The designation of origin is located in northwestern Portugal. It encompasses all municipalities of the districts of Braga and Viana do Castelo, plus legally specified municipalities and some parishes in Aveiro, Porto, Vila Real, and Viseu. Consequently, a map of Norte or just the historical Minho province is not an accurate replacement for the boundary of the designation of origin.[6]
The first map places Vinho Verde in Portugal; the second zooms in on the entire wine region.[7][8]
Size, altitude, and production
For 2024/2025, the vineyard area of the demarcated region is estimated at approximately 17,000 hectares, distributed over about 66,000 plots. The vineyards are located at an altitude of less than 700 meters above sea level. Based on the legal demarcation and official 2025 administrative geodata, the bounding box of the area measures an estimated 155 kilometers from north to south and 98 kilometers from west to east; these are calculated geographical extents, not driving distances.[9][10][11]
In 2024/2025, the grape harvest suitable for DO Vinho Verde and IG Minho totaled 134,567,890 kilograms. From this, approximately 102 million liters of wine were estimated: 1.02 million hectoliters, equivalent to about 136 million 0.75-liter bottles when the total volume is arithmetically converted to bottle capacity. The latter figure is a volume equivalent and not a reported number of actually bottled bottles.[12]
The nine named subregions
The DO has nine subregions: Amarante, Ave, Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção e Melgaço, Paiva, and Sousa. These names may only be used under the applicable conditions.[13]
Why do climate and soil differ within the region?
According to the product specification, the landscape forms a natural amphitheater from the Atlantic coast toward the interior. River valleys carry maritime air inland, but the influence diminishes behind terrain and at a greater distance from the sea. Therefore, zones close to the coast are generally cooler and wetter, while sheltered inland parts can be warmer and have greater temperature fluctuations.[14]
The soils are mostly shallow and of granitic origin. Two narrower strips of schist rock, a form of slate, cross the area from southeast to northwest. Location, altitude, exposure, and water management subsequently create local differences; thus, no single uniform "Vinho Verde soil" exists.[15]
Which grapes define Vinho Verde?
White grapes
Loureiro is widely planted in the Atlantic-influenced parts. Alvarinho is strongly associated with Monção e Melgaço, while Arinto—locally also known as Pedernã—is found throughout the region. Avesso, Azal, and Trajadura complete the spectrum. The full list of authorized varieties is longer.[17]
Red grapes
Vinhão is the most widely used red grape in the region. Additionally, varieties including Espadeiro, Borraçal, Amaral, and Padeiro are permitted. Red Vinho Verde is therefore a fully-fledged part of the origin, even if white wine is more visible internationally.[18]
Plantings and shares
Regional figures for 2024/2025 list 4,214 hectares of Loureiro, 2,241 hectares of Alvarinho, 2,097 hectares of Arinto, and 1,544 hectares of Vinhão. Divided by the reported regional total of approximately 17,000 hectares, this amounts to estimated shares of 24.8%, 13.2%, 12.3%, and 9.1%, respectively. A 2024 regional presentation divides the total vineyard area by grape color into 80% white and 20% red grapes.[19][20]
Other authorized grapes
The DO permits a total of 45 grape varieties: 23 white and 22 red. In addition to the varieties mentioned above, the other white grapes are Batoca, Cainho, Cascal, Diagalves, Esganinho, Esganoso, Fernão Pires, Folgasão, Gouveio, Lameiro, Malvasia-Fina, Malvasia-Rei, Pintosa, São Mamede, Semillon, Sercial, and Tália. The other red grapes are Alicante-Bouschet, Alvarelhão, Baga, Doçal, Doce, Espadeiro-Mole, Grand-Noir, Labrusco, Mourisco, Pedral, Pical, Rabo-de-Anho, Sezão, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Verdelho-Tinto, and Verdial-Tinto.[21]
Still or sparkling
Not every Vinho Verde has noticeable carbonation, and not every bottle is intended to be drunk young. The official description ranges from light, fresh wines to more structured styles suitable for aging. In addition, there are protected sparkling categories. Grape, subregion, harvest, and winemaking are therefore more informative than the cliché of a single light, fizzy style.[22][23]
What does Vinho Verde mean on the label?
A bottle with the DO name must come from the demarcated area and comply with the product specification and certification. For the general DO, a maximum yield of 10,666 kilograms of grapes per hectare applies. Additional conditions apply for subregional labeling, grape names, and certain product types. A subregional name narrows the origin; it is not an automatic quality ranking.[24]
