Cantina Colterenzio Lafóa Alto Adige Chardonnay
The Colterenzio Lafóa Chardonnay 2019 is one of those wines that immediately shows what is possible with Chardonnay at a top level. This is not a fresh, simple variant, but a powerful and layered wine with depth, structure, and aging potential. From the first sip, you notice that serious work has been done here, from old vines to precise vinification.
This is exactly the type of Chardonnay you sit down for and which reveals more with every sip.
Origin: Alto Adige
The grapes grow at high altitudes in Alto Adige, where extreme temperature differences make all the difference.
- 400 to 550 meters altitude: ensures fresh acidity and slow ripening.
- Moraine soils with sand and gravel: provide structure and precision.
- Cool climate with large day-night differences: enhances aromatic complexity.
These conditions yield a Chardonnay with both power and tension.
Grape and vinification
Chardonnay – Alto Adige (old vines)
Old vines with low yields ensure extra concentration and depth in the wine.
The grapes are pressed directly without destemming, after which fermentation takes place in a combination of new and used oak barriques. A portion undergoes malolactic fermentation, which provides extra roundness. The wine then ages for about 10 months on its fine lees with regular bâtonnage, followed by another 6 months of bottle aging.
This approach ensures a perfect balance between freshness, structure, and creaminess.
Character and style
In the glass, you immediately see the intensity, with a clear straw-yellow color and green reflections. The aroma opens rich and inviting with notes of honeydew melon, creamy fruit, and subtle nutty nuances. On the palate, the wine is full and round, but never heavy. The fresh acidity keeps everything in balance, while the subtle oak influence provides extra depth.
The finish is long, soft, and layered, exactly what you expect from a Chardonnay of this caliber.
