Benita Sophie Riesling Alcohol-free, Austria
Benita Sophie Riesling Alcohol-free is an alcohol-free wine that clearly showcases what Riesling is so loved for. How do you preserve the character of Riesling in an alcohol-free wine? By first making a real wine with grape-typical tension, aging on lees, and a style that builds sufficient aromatic depth before dealcoholization. Precisely because of this, the recognizable Riesling profile remains intact here, with tropical fruit, citrus, and lively acidity.
Vineyards and region
The basis for this wine lies in Mannersdorf an der March, in the northeast of Austria, close to the border with Slovakia.
-
Origin: Weingut Lobner is located in Mannersdorf an der March, on the river March, in a region with a long agricultural and viticultural tradition.
-
Soil: The vineyards are on loess soils, a soil type that provides finesse and good water management.
-
Age of vines: The Riesling comes from vineyards between 8 and 45 years old, which beautifully combines freshness and depth.
-
Harvest: The grapes are hand-picked in the second half of September, spread over approximately 4 weeks.
-
Selection: After picking, an additional selection takes place at the winery, so that only suitable fruit forms the basis for the wine.
This careful manual harvest is a clear USP here, as it ensures greater precision and grape typicity even before dealcoholization.
Vinification and aging
The vinification aims to build as much Riesling character as possible before the alcohol is removed from the wine.
-
Fermentation and maturation: Fermentation and aging take place in stainless steel tanks, ensuring that the fruity and fresh profile of Riesling remains central.
-
Lees aging: The wine remains on the lees until early March, which adds extra texture and more aromatic depth.
-
Style choice: The base wine is made in a spätlese style, so that even after dealcoholization, sufficient recognizable Riesling character remains.
-
Analysis: The final product contains approximately 0.3–0.38% alcohol and 31 g/l residual sugar, which results in a smooth semi-dry style with lively tension.
-
Allergens and shelf life: The wine contains sulphites and has a shelf life of approximately 3 years.
The combination of lees aging and a spätlese-like base is the main vinification USP here, as it ensures that the wine, even without alcohol, still comes across as true Riesling.

About Weingut Lobner
Weingut Lobner is a family business in Mannersdorf an der March, currently run by Benita Lobner, the fourth generation of the house. Benita, born in 2001, completed her third harvest in 2023 and manages the estate together with her father Gerhard J. Lobner. After her education at the HBLA for viticulture and fruit growing in Klosterneuburg and internships in Kamptal and the Mosel, she continues to build her own distinct style, with a strong focus on Riesling, which now accounts for 51% of the plantings. Since 2023, she has been producing this alcohol-free Riesling under her own name, and from the 2024 harvest, the estate will be organically certified.
