The story of Graham's Port is almost idyllic. It began with two brothers, William and John Graham. In the early 19th century, they ran a flourishing textile business in Porto, Portugal's second city. In 1820, one of their customers owed the textile business 27 barrels of Port to pay the debt. This inspired the brothers to start producing port on a large scale.

The brothers soon decided to produce Port. Not just any Port, but the finest Port in Portugal. Their adventure began in the Douro Valley, the birthplace of many leading Port houses. Major advances were made at the end of the 19th century. In 1890, a massive winery was established in Vila Nova de Gaia. This winery, Graham's Lodge, is still used to age Graham's Port today.
