Buy or order Burmester Port wine

One of the world's first truly great port houses. With origins in London and a subsequent relocation to Portugal, it's the classic story of how most port houses came to be. However, Burmester's Port wines received considerable praise and provided ample supplies for Londoners in the 18th century. London was grateful; so grateful that a street was named after them in the prestigious Wimbledon district.

The founding of Burmester Port

The history of Burmester Port dates back to the first half of the 18th century. It begins with two German merchants, Henry Burmester and John Nash. They established a flourishing grain trade in London. Nothing unusual so far. However, during the 18th century, London became the vibrant center for a sweet, fortified wine from Portugal: Port. Londoners, and indeed the rest of the United Kingdom, were crazy about this sweet delicacy. Many merchants began to focus on shipping Port. In 1750, Burmester decided to focus on this. The foundation of Burmester Port was laid.

Burmester Port in Portugal

The Burmester company moved to Vila Nova de la Frontera in 1750, where it focused entirely on exporting Port. Production eventually became a significant part of the business. Over many decades, Burmester has developed into one of Portugal's most impressive port houses.

The best Port from Burmester

Over the years, Burmester has created countless iconic wines. The most famous is probably the Burmester Jockey Club, named after the equestrian sport the Burmester family was so passionate about. The Burmester Jockey Club Reserve Tawny is a rich and complex port, where the classic Portuguese grapes Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional form a fantastic trio.

Burmester's vintage Ports are also very noteworthy. The only drawback to this vintage port is that Burmester only produces it in truly good years. On average, a tan Burmester Port emerges from the cellars every four to five years. However, it can also take longer: the tan 2015 is currently available, but the previous vintage dates back to 2005!
