Vintage Report
The 2021 vintage in South Africa is rated as excellent with a score of 94 points according to the reference charts. The wines from this year show excellent quality and a youthful character with further aging potential.
Well, honestly, we fell for the label, and thankfully, for the first sip as well. This is what you get when you put an artistic wine lover in a seafood bar with a pencil, a glass of wine, and an overdose of inspiration. Patrick Robertson is a creative soul through and through, with a deep passion for wine and food. He saw a great opportunity with this artistic image and the large and growing demand from seafood bars and fish restaurants.
The special wines of The Fishwives Club
In collaboration with one of South Africa's largest wineries, "Buitenverwachting," located south of Cape Town, he developed a pleasantly drinkable Sauvignon Blanc, a subtle Chardonnay, a light Rosé, and a smooth Merlot. For this red wine, he chose the renowned South African red wine region of Stellenbosch. He commissioned the young and talented winemaker Helanie van Hoopenburg to create his Merlot. She understands the feminine palette like no other and therefore fits perfectly with the philosophy of "The Fishwives Club." The Fishwives Club has a remarkable history. One that raises doubts about its authenticity. The story begins several years ago when owner Patrick Robertson, at the age of 43, lost his business, his family, and his home. He had little money left and moved back to his hometown of Hout Bay, near Cape Town. At his wit's end, he visited some fortune tellers. They all had the same message for him: the future lies at sea. That same evening, when he encountered a wine label designer at the bar and discovered some labels depicting mermaids sitting on large fish, the period of adversity was over. And so, The Fishwives Club was born. The aromas and flavors of this Merlot
This Merlot has aromas of ripe plums and cherries. It's slightly spicy with notes of black pepper, dark chocolate, and candied fruit. It pairs wonderfully with surf and turf dishes, as well as fish stews and fried fish with hearty sauces.Product details
