The vineyards in Stefan Voda

The distinction between Moldova's wine regions isn't as clear-cut as in France. However, this former Soviet state boasts plenty of leading vineyards. The southeast, in particular, in the Stefan Voda region, boasts numerous prestigious vineyards. But make no mistake: Moldova is a true wine country. A full 10% of its total area is under vine, a percentage no other country even comes close to. Exports are primarily concentrated in Moscow, but more and more Western countries are discovering the unparalleled quality of Salcuta and other Moldovan wines.

A wood aging for Salcuta Pinot Noir Winemaker's Way

Salcuta Winery specializes primarily in traditional, established grape varieties. No local varieties, but familiar names that thrive surprisingly well in the Stefan Voda region. This is partly due to the influence of the nearby Black Sea. The Pinot Noir grapes are of top quality, and that's immediately apparent: you detect blueberries, blackcurrants, and a hint of raspberry. A hint of vanilla reveals the six-month oak aging. The flavor is typical Pinot Noir: intense, fruity, and slightly earthy. You'll taste soft fruit and a pronounced vanilla.
