Vintage Report

The 2023 vintage in South Africa is characterised by excellent quality with a score of 90, with the wines still showing a youthful and tannic character. The growing season benefited from moderate temperatures and a good thermal amplitude between day and night for optimal ripening.
A delicious Pinot Noir wine from Paul Cluver's beautiful vineyards. The grapes used are exclusively from Burgundian clones. The result is a fragrant wine with warm fruity notes. The flavor is fruity and smooth with a hint of oak, thanks to the oak aging.

The vinification of Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir

Paul Cluver Winery has been among the top wineries in South Africa for years. The first vineyards were planted in the cool Elgin region, a small area in the Overberg district. Formerly an apple-growing region, most farmers have since converted to wine growing. Thanks to its location in the cool area, near the sea, the wines are remarkably fresh and have just the right amount of tension. The family business is proud to have been a pioneer in this appellation. The climate is excellent for high-quality Pinot Noir grapes. Temperatures are moderate and vary well throughout the day and night. When the grapes are fully ripe, they are harvested in the early morning. In the winery, the grapes are hand-sorted and then crushed. This is followed by a cold maceration process of 6 to 8 days. Fermentation follows, with the skins and caps being hand-immersed twice a day. After this, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. Finally, the wine is aged on the lees for 12 months.

The smell and taste of Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir

With a bright, dark red color, the Estate Pinot Noir radiates in the glass. The nose offers earthy aromas complemented by notes of red and dark berries. These notes are also evident on the palate, combined with savory notes and a hint of oak from its aging. The finish is long and lingering. Thanks to its natural acidity, this wine pairs perfectly with game dishes and hard cheeses.
