Louis Latour Moulin-à-Vent 2023 Beaujolais, France
Louis Latour Moulin-à-Vent 2023 is a red Beaujolais made from Gamay from one of the region's 10 crus. Moulin-à-Vent is known as one of the more powerful and age-worthy appellations within Beaujolais, with more structure and depth than the lightest styles from the region. This 2023 combines raspberry, redcurrant, blackcurrant, and a hint of nutmeg with the rounded, vibrant style that makes Gamay so appealing.
Vineyards and region
Moulin-à-Vent belongs to the highest quality category within Beaujolais and is known for wines with more complexity and aging potential.
• Location / Origin: The Moulin-à-Vent appellation is located around Romanèche-Thorins and Chénas. The name refers to the old windmill in the heart of the vineyards, a recognizable symbol of this cru.
• Appellation: What is Moulin-à-Vent? Moulin-à-Vent is one of the 10 Crus du Beaujolais and is considered an origin for Gamay with more structure, complexity, and aging potential.
• Soil: The vines grow on pink schistous granite. This soil warms up well, drains water, and helps Gamay develop ripe fruit, tension, and a lightly spicy undertone.
• Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 50 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring careful handling of the delicate Gamay fruit.
Grape composition
This red Beaujolais is made entirely from Gamay.
• Gamay – Moulin-à-Vent: Gamay gives this wine its juicy red fruit, vibrant acidity, soft tannins, and fragrant fruit expression. In Moulin-à-Vent, the grape gains more structure and aging potential than in many lighter Beaujolais wines.
Vinification and aging
The vinification aims for fruitiness, roundness, and an elegant structure.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments traditionally in open vats and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. This process helps to extract fruit, color, and soft tannins from the Gamay grapes, while malolactic fermentation makes the acidity feel rounder.
• Aging: The wine ages for 8–10 months in stainless steel tanks. This preserves the bright presence of raspberry, redcurrant, blackcurrant, and the vibrant fruit expression, without oak influence.
• Aging Potential: This Moulin-à-Vent has an aging potential of 5–7 years. This is remarkable within Beaujolais and aligns with the more robust, complex style of this cru.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
In the glass, Louis Latour Moulin-à-Vent 2023 has a clear color with ruby nuances. The aroma opens with raspberry, redcurrant, and blackcurrant. The taste is round, elegant, and vibrant, with red fruit, a hint of nutmeg, and a fresh finish.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Moulin-à-Vent at 13–15 °C, so that the red fruit, soft tannins, and spicy notes remain beautifully balanced.
• Food pairing: Delicious with grilled meats and aged cheeses.
