Allendorf Spätburgunder Trocken VDP Gutswein, Rheingau, Germany

The Allendorf Spätburgunder Trocken VDP Gutswein is the entry-level red wine in the range of Weingut Allendorf in the Rheingau. What exactly does VDP Gutswein mean? This is the basic classification within the VDP structure, where the wine comes from the estate's own vineyards and must show a clear expression of grape and region. In this case, it is Spätburgunder, the German name for Pinot Noir.

With 13.14% alcohol and a dry style, this wine shows how Spätburgunder in the Rheingau can be both fruity and structured.

Origin and vineyards

The grapes come from south-facing slopes in the Rheingau.

  • Rheingau, Germany: classic region primarily known for Riesling, but also produces Spätburgunder.

  • Southern exposure: ensures optimal sun exposure and ripening.

  • Loam, loess, and quartzite soils: contribute to terroir expression and structure.

This combination produces a Spätburgunder with ripe fruit and clear tension.

Grape and vinification

Spätburgunder – Rheingau
Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir and is known for its refined structure and aromatic precision.

The grapes are carefully selected. The wine matures in large wooden barrels aged 80 to 120 years and then develops for another 15 to 18 months in the barrel. This aging provides extra complexity without overpowering the fruit. The wine is vegan and sealed with a screw cap.

Character and style

In the glass, this Spätburgunder reveals aromas of blueberry and red fruit. On the palate, you taste red wild strawberry, blackberry, and redcurrant, followed by a light spice and an earthy note. The wine is complex and structured, yet very approachable and lively. It can be served lightly chilled, which further accentuates its freshness.
