About twenty years ago, Nero d'Avola was virtually unknown. Few wine drinkers were familiar with this grape, and even if they did, the reviews were often not positive. For a long time, it was synonymous with the bulk wines for which Sicily was so famous. As Sicilian wines improved, the quality of Nero d'Avola also rose. Now, it has a genuine fan base, and wine drinkers are crazy about this atypical, yet characteristically Sicilian grape. Winery Aulico, part of the Cantine Ermes cooperative, has extensive plantings of Nero d'Avola, and for good reason: they call it their personal favorite.

The wines of Aulico

Aulico Winery is part of a larger entity, Cantine Ermes. This cooperative has become one of Italy's leading winemakers. And yet, Cantine Ermes hasn't even existed for a quarter of a century; we call that impressive. It began in the Belice Valley, in western Sicily near the famous city of Marsala. Several winegrowers were left in ashes after a violent earthquake. In the summer of 1998, they decided to collaborate intensively to try and make something of themselves. The cooperative has continued to grow every year. Cantine Ermes now has nearly 2,400 members, making it one of the largest players in Italian wine.

Deep purple notes envelop us upon pouring. The aroma is unmistakably Sicilian: zesty yet fruity, with a lively acidity. Freshly picked raspberries and tart red cherries are clearly evident in the aroma and taste. The velvety tannins give this Aulico Nero d'Avola Sicilia the necessary power.
