Vintage Report

2020 was an excellent vintage for Piedmont, rated 94 points by Robert Parker. The conditions were very favorable, resulting in wines with good balance and character.

Our Review

I always find Piedmont wines where creaminess, acidity and tannins come together very interesting. You often see this in Nebbiolo / Barbera blends. Coincidentally, this grape, Albarossa, is a cross between those two. This cross also brings some Cabernet-like characteristics. Very tasty.

Castello di Neive Piemonte DOC Albarossa, Piedmont, Italy

The Castello di Neive Piemonte DOC Albarossa showcases a lesser-known Piedmontese grape specifically developed in the region. Albarossa is a cross between Nebbiolo and Barbera, created to combine structure and aromatic intensity with better adaptation to the local climate. What can you expect from Albarossa from Piedmont? The grape is known for its deep color, firm structure, and ripe fruit with clear freshness.

This wine falls under the Piemonte DOC and is made entirely from Albarossa.

Origin: Piedmont

The vineyards are located in the hilly landscape of the Langhe around Neive, where calcareous soils and elevation differences ensure optimal ripening.

  • Piemonte DOC: appellation within the Piedmont region.

  • Hilly location: supports slow and balanced ripening.

  • Calcareous marl soils: contribute to structure and aromatic precision.

The combination of soil and climate gives Albarossa both power and freshness.

Grape and vinification

Albarossa – Piedmont
Albarossa is a cross of Nebbiolo and Barbera, developed in Piedmont. The grape combines the color and freshness of Barbera with the structure of Nebbiolo.

Vinification takes place with controlled fermentation to achieve optimal extraction of color and structure. Subsequently, the wine matures in wood to refine the tannins and add extra complexity.

Character and style

In the glass, this Piemonte Albarossa displays a deep ruby red color. The wine is known for aromas of dark fruit, spice, and subtle earthy notes. The structure is firm, with clear but ripe tannins and fresh acidity that provide balance.

Serve around 16–18 °C to allow the fruit and structure to come into their own optimally.
