Our Review
The vines for this Ao Yun are planted in the foothills of the Himalayas. This blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdor, and Syrah is vinified near the city of Shangri-La. A unique wine from China, rarely produced but incredibly delicious.
A unique Chinese wine from Ao Yun
On the banks of the Mekong River, after four years of searching, the ideal terroir for producing red wine in China was found. In northern Yunnan, the Ao Yun winery secured the perfect location. The vineyards lie at an altitude of between 2,200 and 2,600 meters. The Cabernet Sauvignon grape, in particular, is able to express the full refinement of the unique terroir here. The terroir enjoys an ideal climate, with temperatures comparable to those of Bordeaux. The name Ao Yun literally means "flying above the clouds," referring to the clouds that cover the mountaintops. Owned by LVMH, it began with the vision and desire to produce grand cru wines. And that dream has come true. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand. In the winery, a strict selection process is carried out to ensure high quality. Only the very best is good enough. The grapes are then gently pressed and undergo temperature-controlled fermentation. Once this is completed, the wine is given the necessary rest and can then be bottled.
The aroma and taste of Ao Yun 2020
The 2020 Ao Yun arrives in the glass with a warm red color. Expect abundant aromas of blackberry and blueberry complemented by spicy notes. The nose is rich and ripe. Take a moment, and you'll also notice aromas of tobacco and pine. On the palate, it's a full-bodied and rounded wine. Creamy, ripe tannins and plenty of ripe fruit on the palate. A fresh and lively wine that will only improve with age.
