Nore Grenache Blanc 2024 Pays d’Oc, France
On the steep southern slope of the Pic de Nore, Grenache Blanc develops a remarkably distinct character. Nore Grenache Blanc 2024 comes from a wilder part of Southern France where the Montagne Noire protects the vineyards from cooler northern winds, while the transition between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences adds extra tension to its origin. This gives the wine a beautiful combination of floral aromas, roundness, and a clear southern character.
Vineyards and region
The origin plays a much larger role here than one might expect from an accessible Pays d'Oc wine.
- Location / Origin: The Grenache Blanc for this wine grows on the very steep southern slope of the Pic de Nore, northwest of Carcassonne, in the Montagne Noire. This places the wine in a remarkably precise origin within Southern France.
- Altitude: The Pic de Nore, at 1211 m, is the highest point of the Montagne Noire. Although the vineyard is not on the summit itself, this altitude and the mountain range clearly define the local climate.
- Climate & Influences: This mountain range forms the dividing line between Atlantic influence to the west and Mediterranean influence to the south. Precisely this transition helps to combine freshness and southern ripeness in the same wine.
- Landscape: The vineyards are nestled among garrigue on the southern slope of the mountain. This underscores the wild, Mediterranean character of this place.
Grape Composition
Here, everything revolves around one grape, which in this region is primarily used for its roundness and floral charm.
- Grenache Blanc – Pays d’Oc: Grenache Blanc forms the complete base and gives the wine its round finish, soft breadth, and floral aromatics.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Golden yellow in the glass, with an aroma reminiscent of a bouquet of wildflowers. On the palate, this white wine is round and full, with a soft, southern structure that holds up beautifully. The finish remains broad and pleasant, with just enough softness to make it very approachable.
- Dishes: Dishes with herbs or garlic and Mediterranean fish preparations pair very naturally with this wine, as it has enough roundness to beautifully complement spiciness and delicate fish textures.
More information about Nore
The name Nore refers to the Pic de Nore and plays with "noir" and "or," black and gold. This alludes on the one hand to the dark clouds that often form above the mountains and on the other hand to the former gold mine on this mountain, where gold was extracted until 2003. Gold and silver were also mined from these slopes in the Middle Ages, which gives this wine a remarkably strong local story.
