The beginning of the Rutherford family business

Rutherford Ranch Winery is located on the site of the original Round Hill Winery, founded in 1978 by Ernie and Virginia Van Asperen and Charlie Abela. When the Van Asperens retired in 2000, Marko and Theo Zaninovich, longtime shareholders in the Van Asperen family, purchased the winery. The estate's vineyards were replanted with superior vines, and the winery and tasting room underwent a major renovation. However, the 100-year-old olive grove and the estate's unpretentious charm remain essentially unchanged. The grapes come from select lots in various Napa Valley appellations. Hand-harvesting began early in mid-August, ensuring the grapes are perfectly ripe. They are then carefully transported to the winery where they are selected. The lots are then carefully blended to create a mix of nuanced flavors, aromas, and varietal characteristics.

What does Rutherford Ranch Merlot taste like?

Soft tannins and the grape's inherent sweetness make this wine an ideal accompaniment to barbecue and other light meat dishes. The aroma offers abundant cherries, blueberries, sage, and toasted oak, complemented by hints of vanilla. The palate is soft and rounded, with plenty of ripe fruit and light spice, and some oak and toast on the back of the tongue.
