Maps and location
From sun-drenched coastal vineyards to the high slopes of Mount Etna: Sicily brings together many origins and wine styles.
What does Sicily encompass as a wine region?
This dossier uses Sicily as an overarching wine region. Within that broad definition, both the island-wide DOC Sicilia and smaller, more precisely demarcated origins exist. The official product specification stipulates that the production area of DOC Sicilia includes the entire territory of the Sicily region. The zoomed-in map therefore shows the actual legal boundary of this protected origin and not an administrative substitution.[1]
A label with Sicilia or Terre Siciliane therefore says something different than a specific origin such as Etna, Marsala, Pantelleria, or Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Those who want to predict the style should look not only at the regional designation but also at the protected origin, the grape variety, the vintage, and the producer.
Why do Sicilian wines differ so much?
The official product specification distinguishes a predominantly mountainous north, hills in the center, south, and southwest, a plateau in the southeast, volcanic terrain in the east, and coastal plains. The sunny Mediterranean climate experiences hot, dry, but windy summers. The soils vary due to different rock complexes and are often mineral-rich; in the east, volcanic material plays an important role.[2]
Those differences in altitude, location, climate, and soil influence ripening, freshness, and structure. That is why the island can produce both lively white wine and juicy red wine, powerful age-worthy wine, sparkling wine, and sweet specialties.
How large is the viticulture?
For DOC Sicilia, 20,595 hectares of vineyard area were claimed in 2024. The registration that year included 7,264 winegrowers and 500 bottlers; 614,825 hectoliters of DOC Sicilia were bottled. For 2025, a separate production of 75,411,197 bottles is registered. The years and definitions differ and therefore should not be added up as a single snapshot.[3]
The broader regional statistics also include wine outside of DOC Sicilia. For all of Sicily, 2.746 million hectoliters of wine and must were reported in 2024, with a total vineyard area of 96,903 hectares.[4]
Which protected origins are important?
The current national list contains 24 Sicilian protected designations of origin (DOP): one DOCG and 23 DOCs.[5] In addition, the regional inventory lists seven protected geographical indications, designated as IGP or IGT.[6] Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the only Sicilian Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), the highest Italian category for a protected wine origin.
DOC Sicilia was recognized by ministerial decree on November 22, 2011; the rules apply from the 2012/2013 harvest.[7] The designation covers the entire Sicilian territory. Etna DOC, Marsala DOC, Pantelleria DOC, and the other origins within the region each have their own demarcation and own production rules; they are not legally subordinate to DOC Sicilia.
A protected origin is not a guarantee of taste in itself. It primarily indicates where the grapes come from and the production conditions the wine must meet. The permitted categories and grapes differ per designation; for DOC Sicilia, those rules are laid down in the product specification.[8]
Which grapes determine the Sicilian profile?
Regional planting figures for 2021 list the largest white categories as Catarratto Bianco Lucido with 17.7%, Catarratto Bianco Comune with 14.9%, Grillo with 9.7%, and Inzolia with 5.0% of the total Sicilian vineyard area for wine grapes. Among the red grapes, Nero d’Avola with 17.4%, Syrah with 5.8%, and Nerello Mascalese with 3.8% are the largest.[9]
A separate count by grape color divided the total regional vineyard area in 2020 into 63% white grapes, 33% red grapes, and 4% other categories.[10] Carricante is strongly associated with Etna, while Zibibbo — also known as Muscat of Alexandria — is important for aromatic and sweet styles. Frappato and Perricone provide other red accents.
For the basis of white DOC Sicilia wine, the product specification mentions Insolia, Catarratto, Grillo, Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Sauvignon. For red, it mentions Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese, Perricone, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Nerello Cappuccio. Depending on the wine category, other permitted varieties include Nocera, Carricante, Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir), Moscato Bianco, and Zibibbo; other grape varieties of the same color permitted in Sicily may be added within established percentages.[11]
How are the wines made?
Winemaking ranges from fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve fruit and freshness to skin contact, wood aging, and longer maturation for more structure. For Marsala and sweet wines from Pantelleria, different production methods apply than for a dry DOC Sicilia. The protected origin and technical product information therefore provide more guidance than just the color of the wine.
How to choose a Sicilian wine
- Choose Grillo, Catarratto, or Inzolia when you want to compare dry white Sicilian wine.
- Look at Carricante and Etna Bianco for a white wine from the volcanic east.
- Choose Nero d’Avola for red wine with ripe fruit and pay attention to the origin and maturation for the precise style.
- Compare Nerello Mascalese from Etna when you are looking for tension, structure, and a lighter color.
- Look at Frappato or Cerasuolo di Vittoria for more fragrant red, and at Zibibbo or Marsala for special sweet or fortified styles.
Below this dossier, there are always exactly five available wines from the current Sicilian collection, in the order of the best-selling wines.
