It's the kind of wine that simply hearing its name captivates you with its captivating aromas and exquisite flavor. That's Pesquera. An icon from Spain. Not from Rioja, where so much already originates, but from Ribera del Duero: Spain's undiscovered gem.

Red wine from Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero has long been a relatively unknown wine region. It is located northwest of the Spanish capital, Madrid. The area emerged alongside nearby Rueda, a region that many Dutch wine drinkers are familiar with, particularly thanks to its excellent Verdejo wines. For decades, the Ribera del Duero wine region was the domain of a single winery: Vega Sicilia. The winery certainly hasn't lost its flair; bottles sell for hundreds of euros. However, in the 1970s, a headstrong winemaker, Alejandro Fernandez, decided to take the plunge and start growing wine in Ribera del Duero. No one, including himself, could have imagined that almost half a century after his arrival, the wines would be considered the finest Spanish wines worldwide.

The wines of Pesquera

This winemaker decided to make a change. He planted a large number of the local variety of Tempranillo, the Tinto del Pais. He had a modern approach to viticulture; proper pruning and sufficient attention were his motto. The way the grapes are planted is also unique. Ribera del Duero has a special climate, with severe frost in winter and intense heat in summer. However, this works to the advantage of Pesquera's grapes. The temperature fluctuations accelerate the growth process, producing the best grapes for the finest wines.

Why order Pesquera wine?

Pesquera's wines are an oddity. Many Spanish wineries prefer long oak aging and then age their wines in the bottle for extended periods in their cellars. They only leave the cellar when the winemaker is ready to sell them. However, Pesquera chooses to age its wines in the bottle, taking its cue from Bordeaux. Therefore, when you open a bottle of Pesquera wine, be sure to check whether it's ready to drink.
Pesquera Reserva is a classic wine from Ribera del Duero. One of the great wines from this winery. It is produced by Bodegas Pesquera, now one of the most highly regarded wineries in Spain. Alejandro Fernández founded the Pesquera winery in 1972 in his hometown of Pesquera del Duero.

Quality wines from Pesquera

Founder Alejandro Fernández began making wine as a boy with his father, using grapes grown by the family in small vineyards. It was in 1972 that he established his own winery, using a small 16th-century stone press, where he produced fine and elegant wines that earned him worldwide recognition. Tempranillo grapes are produced in vineyards cultivated on poor, gravelly, sandy soils, planted in low trellises to better absorb the heat rising from the ground.

The harvest is carried out with great care, ensuring the grapes are optimally ripe. At the winery, the bunches are destemmed and the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. This process takes place at a temperature of 22 to 27 degrees Celsius, completely naturally without the addition of any extraneous yeasts. After fermentation, the grapes are pressed. The young wine then rests for 20 days in stainless steel tanks and is then transferred to new American oak barrels where it ages for 24 months. Finally, the wine is bottle-aged for 12 months.

Enjoy the inviting aromas of Tinto Pesquera Reserva

Perfection requires patience, but after three years, it's finally time to enjoy this Pesquera Reserva. It glows cherry red in the glass with beautiful sparkles. It has a powerful and highly complex nose with rich aromas of ripe fruit, cocoa, vanilla, and hints of minerality, with a touch of oak in the background. On the palate, powerful, intense, and ripe tannins. The oak also makes a strong presence here, bringing plenty of ripe fruit to the finish, with a long, powerful, and flavorful finish.
Pesquera Crianza is a classic in the more refined Spanish wine segment. Although the Fernandez Rivera family enjoyed early success in the production and sale of harvesting machinery, investing in their own winery was a significant risk, as the Ribera del Duero was still a largely unknown wine-growing region at the time and, aside from the exceptional character of Vega Sicilia, had no reputation for high-quality wines. However, the family recognized the region's potential and had the vision to produce concentrated, high-quality wines. Alejandro Fernández, of the Fernández Rivera family, began cultivating vineyards along the Douro River in 1987. This climate, characterized by moderate to low annual rainfall, dry summers, and harsh winters with wide temperature fluctuations, provides the perfect conditions for ripening Tempranillo grapes. The grapes used to make Condado de Haza Reserva wine come from plots situated at an altitude of 811 meters with predominantly loamy-sandy soils. The grapes are approximately 25 years old. The area has a predominantly dry and windy continental-Atlantic climate with long, cold winters and short, dry, and hot summers.

Wood aging for Condado de Haza Reserva

Condado de Haza Reserva comes from a family with a rich wine history, the Fernández Rivera family, who have produced some of the Ribera del Duero's most famous wines, including the renowned Tinto Pesquera. Condado de Haza Reserva offers an intense and fleshy, elegant and persistent wine. The Familia Fernández Rivera planted their first vineyards in 1987, on the banks of the Douro River, on land that has since become legendary. Currently, Condado de Haza has 200 hectares of vineyards planted entirely with Tempranillo, the signature grape of all four Familia Fernández Rivera wineries.

The grapes are vinified traditionally, and the resulting wine is aged for approximately 24 months in American oak barrels. After aging in barrels, the wine is bottled unfiltered and rests for another 12 months in the winery, where it completes its refining process before being released for sale.

A fruity wine from Condado de Haza

The result is a beautifully clear and vibrant wine. We poured it and were immediately surprised by an intense nose with aromas of ripe fruit – delicious! A light touch of licorice, along with spicy notes from the oak aging, also comes through beautifully. The ripe fruit also comes through on the palate, with an emphasis on round tannins that provide good volume. The licorice reappears in the finish.
