We're all familiar with the famous highway. Cities like Metz, Nancy, Dijon, and Lyon are, of course, familiar with the countless road signs that everyone speeds past on their way to the sun. We continue along the famous A7 to the semi-famous city of Orange. Here, we deviate from the highway and enter perhaps the most beautiful wine region in France: the Cotes du Rhone. Home to many wineries. The most beautiful, in our opinion, is undoubtedly Domaine de La Janasse.

The Cotes du Rhone wines from Domaine de la Janasse

Domaine de la Janasse was born through a rare combination of chance and clear vision. It all began in 1967. Aime Sabon took over the vineyards from his father. His father had been a winegrower for years, but he always took the grapes to a cooperative. Aimé Sabon wanted to develop the wine himself. He named the estate De La Janasse, after the family farm in Courtezon, about an hour and a half's drive from Montpellier.

The vineyards of Domaine de la Janasse

After acquiring the vineyards, Aimé immediately saw the area's potential. He continued to buy more vineyards, increasing the total acreage from 15 hectares to its current 90 hectares. Aimé has since received help from his son, Christophe Sabon, and now also from his granddaughter, Isabelle.

The vineyards of Domaine de la Janasse are dominated by the typical Côtes du Rhone varietals, particularly Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, and Clairette. However, what makes Domaine de la Janasse unique is that it also cultivates international varieties. For example, there's also room for the renowned Cabernet Sauvignon, from which the iconic Domaine de la Janasse Terre de Bussiere is made.

What are the most beautiful wines from Domaine de la Janasse?

Domaine de la Janasse is a star in the Cotes du Rhone wine world. However, there is one wine style in which they truly excel. Thanks to the incredible hard work of three generations, Domaine de la Janasse has achieved cult status within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine world in just a few years. The true crown jewel of this style is undoubtedly the Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Today, this company is one of the absolute leaders in this region, and its wines are among the best in their respective classes in international comparisons.

Viognier is one of the flagship vines of the Rhône and is grown almost exclusively in this wine region by French winemakers. The grape had almost completely disappeared after the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century – by 1968, only 14 hectares of Viognier were planted in France. When Rhône wines experienced a renaissance in the mid-1980s, Viognier also benefited. Today, the population in France has returned to over 6,000 hectares.
