While many wineries have histories ranging from decades to centuries, Domaine Berthelemot has a short history. It may hold the record for "the fastest success." Domaine Berthelemot was only founded in 2006. It's a merger of two Burgundy estates, Jean Garaudet and Yves Darviot. This was made possible in part by the talented Brigitte Berthelemot, who, since its founding, has earned her the title of Queen of Burgundy.

The vineyards of Domaine Berthelemot

Domaine Berthelemot's main base is Beaune and Meursault. However, the winery has been expanding rapidly since its founding. Since 2012, it has also acquired several new vineyards in Puligny, Chassagne, and Meursault. Acquiring new vineyards is not done lightly: only the finest locations are considered for inclusion in Domaine Berthelemot. Despite being a young winery, quality is paramount.

The Domaine Berthelemot wines from Burgundy

Through the acquisition of several vineyards, Domaine Berthelemot has acquired a beloved reputation. The wines from the Meursault and Montrachet regions, in particular, are highly regarded. Unfortunately, Berthelemot production is exceptionally low: this is to maintain its sky-high quality. Because of this, we at perfectewijn.nl are only allowed to sell a small portion of our selection, simply because there's very little available. However, we do have the real cream of the crop, with the Domaine Berthelemot Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres as the highlight.

Why buy Domaine Berthelemot wine?

Besides the flagship Uitred Puligny Montrachet, Berthelemot also produces an excellent Chassagne Montrachet. Uniquely, these Chardonnay grapes also come from a premier cru vineyard, Abbaye de Morgeot. Our favorite wine from Domaine Berthelemot is definitely the Meursault. This 100% Chardonnay perfectly captures the power and character of the Meursault in a 75cl bottle.
Pommard is known as the most famous red wine region in the Côte de Beaune. The wines are consistently rich and aromatic. Some of the Pinot Noir vines from Domaine Berthelemot here date back to 1924. This gives the wine great depth, and the opulence of the vintage makes this beautiful Pommard highly recommended!

The success of the Berthelemot winery

Berthelemot is a young estate, established in 2006 as the result of a merger of plots owned by Jean Garaudet and Yves Darvoit. Its success is due to the hard work and talent of founder Brigitte Berthelemot, along with her estate manager and winemaker Marc Cugney. The vines are planted in limestone soils in excellent locations. The vineyards are carefully monitored, allowing for timely planning. Burgundy is a humid region known for its high limestone content. This allows for the production of quality wines from Pinot Noir grapes in the diverse climates of Burgundy.

Vinification of Berthelemot's Pommard Rouge

This wine clearly focuses on one grape variety: Pinot Noir. Only impeccable grapes were supplied for this wonderfully balanced grape variety from Berthelemot. When perfectly ripe, the grapes for Pommard Noizons Rouge are harvested exclusively by hand, without the aid of coarse and less selective harvesting machinery. After harvesting, the grapes reach the winery as quickly as possible. Here, they are selected and carefully crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. After fermentation is complete, Pommard Noizons Rouge is allowed to harmonize with the fine yeast for several months.

The Pommard from the Burgundy wine region is a bright, light red in the glass. The aroma reveals aromas of mulberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Its fruity character is combined with fruity balsamic notes. It is a dry wine with no residual sugar. This well-balanced red wine has an extremely silky texture, finishing with a delightful aftertaste.
A fabulous white wine from the already iconic Domaine Berthelemot winery. A perfect location for winegrowing. The Domaine Berthelemot winery was established when the founder merged two vineyards owned by other wineries. As a result, the vines for the Chardonnay grape are exceptionally old. The vineyards for this white wine were planted as early as 1985. For almost 40 years, the finest Chardonnay grapes have been grown here, thanks in part to its prime location. The grapes for Domaine Berthelemot Pernand Vergelesses Belles are grown on the most beautiful slopes of Pernand Vergelesses.

A white wine from Burgundy

Along with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay is the most important grape variety in Burgundy. It produces the most prestigious wines, which are highly sought after worldwide. How about a Meursault or a Puligny Montrachet? All top wines featuring Chardonnay grapes. This white wine is a bit sweeter and more approachable. This is immediately noticeable in the aroma. You smell distinct minerals and soft tropical fruit. A floral note is immediately discernible to the discerning wine drinker. The taste is typical of Pernand: fresh, lively, balanced, and slightly salty. Favorable weather conditions in spring, with no damage from April frost, and a hot, dry summer accelerated the grapes' growth process. These conditions resulted in grapes with a higher concentration of sugars and flavors, a promise for the quality of the wine. Despite some concerns about drought, summer rains provided sufficient hydration to the vines, enabling a harvest in perfect condition. The soil, a mixture of limestone and fine clay with inclusions of "chaillots" (a deposit of flint, silica, and limestone), provides an ideal base for the development of the Pinot Noir grapes. This composition contributes to the wine's complexity and structure, while imparting its characteristic minerality and finesse.

Characteristics and Flavor Profile

The Domaine Berthelemot Corton Grand Cru Rouge stands out for its beautiful ruby-red color and complex aromas of red fruit and fresh spices. On the palate, the wine reveals a perfect balance between fullness and structure, interwoven with elegance and refinement. This harmonious combination results in a wine that is both powerful and elegant, with a long, satisfying finish. The subtle and delicate phenolic compositions and aromas, achieved through optimal phenolic aging, emphasize the elegance of this exceptional red wine.

A Legacy of Excellence

The Domaine Berthelemot plot, planted in 1963 at an altitude of 280 meters, contributes to the legendary status of this Grand Cru. Its history, dating back to its gift by Emperor Charlemagne in 775 AD, reinforces the myth surrounding this wine. Domaine Berthelemot is committed to producing wines that reflect the true qualities of the land while simultaneously caring for the vine and its environment.
