More and more wine drinkers are becoming charmed by the soft, fresh, and friendly wines produced in this Alpine country. Despite the sulfite scandal of the mid-1980s, Austria is back in fashion. Thanks in part to the Diwald winery, where purity plays a key role.

The Austrian wines of Diwald

Diwald Winery was founded by the parents of current owner Martin Diwald in 1976. In 1980, during the pre-sulphur scandal, his parents were among the first winemakers to adopt a fully organic approach to their production. Thanks to their efforts forty years ago, organic viticulture is now a major player in Austria. Diwald is internationally regarded as a pioneer of organic wines, something the family is very proud of.

The vineyards in Wagram

Diwald's vineyards began with just 4 hectares, located in Wagram, a popular wine-growing region northwest of the Austrian capital, Vienna. Now, the vineyards encompass a whopping 20 hectares, all of which are organically farmed. Diwald Winery specializes in Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, which are considered phenomenal thanks to their gentle pressing. The local blue grape Zweigelt also holds a small place in the vineyards. Unique is the small planting of Chardonnay. This grape, along with Gruner Veltliner, forms an excellent duo in the Diwald Selection ChaGrü.

The finest wines from Diwald

Diwald's hero is undoubtedly the Gruner Veltliner. This national pride of Austrian wines also manages to create several crown jewels at Diwald, from the classic Diwald Selektion Gruner Veltliner to the sparkling wine Diwald Gruner Veltliner Brut. A personal favorite also exists in the form of Diwald Gruner Veltliner vol Loss. This white wine is a gem that our vinologists unanimously agree on: this is a perfect wine.
Diwald is known for its organic viticulture, and thanks to this philosophy, the grapes are brought in for vinification in the healthiest possible way. This allows the use of sulfites to be kept to a minimum. This results in a beautiful Grüner Veltliner every year. This grape variety is a typical Austrian variety and is also the most common in this country. Thanks to the perfect climate for this grape, it produces ripe grapes and delicious wines.

The beginning of Diwald winery

The Diwald story begins with Hans and Paula Diwald, who began their wine adventure in Großriedenthal around 1970. In 1980, they converted the family farm's small vineyard to organic production. Local residents were quite skeptical of these plans. But over the years, the wines steadily improved, and contacts with other organic winegrowers intensified. Agriculture with arable and livestock farming no longer exists. The original 4-hectare vineyard has grown to 18 hectares, and their son, Martin, has been the operator since 2010. Since 2013, he has been producing in the new cellar, which is equipped with 26 stainless steel tanks, 4 red wine fermentation racks, 11 large wooden barrels, and the latest technology. He combines the old with the new and vinifies the grapes as traditionally and unadulterated as possible. This results in authentic wines shaped by the loess and microclimate of the Wagram, a mountain range in Lower Austria. Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Frühroter Veltliner, Zweigelt, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir are pressed.

The fresh and fruity Grüner Veltliner from Diwald

Selected grapes from various vineyards form the basis for Grüner Veltliner. Spontaneously fermented in stainless steel tanks and stored on the fine lees until spring, the goal here is to represent Grüner Veltliner in its classic, fresh, and bold form. Grüner Veltliner as it lives and breathes. Fresh and fruity with lively acidity, a stimulating wine with good presence and a certain simplicity. The winery is located in the Wagram-Donauland region, 60 kilometers north of Vienna. Paula and Hans Diwald were pioneers in converting their winery to fully organic viticulture at a time when chemicals and additives were prominent in winemaking.

Less is more, that's the rule at Diwald. It's a matter of allowing the grapes to express their unique character and blending them as little as possible with other grape varieties. This white wine comes from vineyards around the town of Grossriedenthaler, where the soil is loose. This very fine-grained, calcareous soil type gives Grüner its characteristic style. All vineyards are cultivated with the utmost respect for nature, without pesticides and in accordance with ecological regulations. In the cellar, only the natural yeast is used on the grapes; nothing is added to alter the wine. The grapes are harvested by hand in early October and fermented spontaneously. The selected vineyards, with their loess soils, create a spicy, lively, and full-bodied wine that speaks volumes about its origins.

The surprising taste experience of Diwald Grüner Veltliner vom Loss

A characteristic Grüner Veltliner from loess soil. The taste will surprise you! A classic Grüner Veltliner with plenty of charm. Fresh aromas of green apples, lime, and white pepper. The palate is refreshing with a pleasantly high fruit acidity.
