For these wines, we had to cross the Ligurian Sea to the island of Corsica. Although closer to Italy, Corsica is quintessentially French. Corsican viticulture isn't as flourishing as that of other Mediterranean islands like Sardinia and Sicily, but it has a strong track record. The more than thirty widely used indigenous grape varieties, in particular, give Corsican wines a uniquely distinctive character.

The wines of Clos Culombu

Clos Culombu Winery was born out of passion. It all began with Paul Suzzoni. As a former student of the agricultural college in Borgo, northern Corsica, he always had a soft spot for viticulture. With financial and physical support from his father, he established vineyards in Montegrosso and Lumia, two tiny villages in northwestern Corsica. They began with the planting of the local Niellucciu. In 1986, his son, Etienne Suzzoni, took over the winery. Under Etienne's leadership, Clos Culombu was transformed from a small winery into a leading figure in Corsican wines. Etienne still holds the reins, but he has since received considerable help from his eldest son, Paul-Antoine Suzzoni.

Order Clos Culombu wine

While Clos Culombu's acreage was small in the early years, the estate now encompasses 64 hectares of vineyards and 12 hectares of olive trees. It began with a few vines of the Niellucciu grape. Today, alongside a wealth of local varieties like Sciaccarellu and Brustianu, you'll also find well-known names such as Vermentino, Syrah, and Cinsault. Because the grapes are planted relatively close to the coast, they have acquired not only a wealth of character thanks to the granite soil, but also a considerable freshness.
