First of all, it's geographically striking. No other country in the world is as long as Chile. The country is a ribbon stretching an impressive 4,000 kilometers across South America. However, its average width is only 150 kilometers. It's precisely because the country is so narrow that viticulture has flourished. With the ocean to the west and the Andes Mountains on its eastern flank, the conditions for winegrowing are perfect. The Del Pedregal family has cared for the estate for centuries, but Carta Vieja wines didn't arrive until the 1970s. Alberto del Pedregal founded Carta Vieja in 1978, at a time when Chilean winemaking was beginning to flourish.
