The wine is made by Herencia Altés, a small winery located in the town of Batea, under the direction of Núria Altés. This wine is a single-varietal Garnatxa Blanca, the main variety in DO Terra Alta, and specifically from the winery's own vineyards.

An ambitious wine project from Catalonia

Herencia Altes is an ambitious wine project in the southern tip of Catalonia. This wine region boasts a rich winemaking history, with some 100-year-old Garnatxa grapes found here. Convinced of this grape's potential, Nuria Altes decided to harvest and vinify it herself. With the help of French oenologist Claude Gros, she created a beautifully concentrated, complex wine.

The vineyards are cultivated on clay and limestone soils, poor in organic matter. The climate in this area is Mediterranean with a continental influence, characterized by very cold winters and hot, dry summers. Two dominant winds have a significant impact on the quality of the grapes. These are the Cerc, a colder northwesterly wind, which ensures the grapes retain their natural acidity. And the Garvi, a mild sea breeze that ensures the grapes ripen well. These winds also prevent disease and rot in the bunches.

Completely manual harvest for Garnatxa Blanca

All grapes are harvested by hand. Whole clusters are sent directly to the press to minimize contact with the skins. Only the first fraction of the must from the soft press is used, resulting in a yield of 35-40 percent grape must to must. The must is separated from the oxidized components, and fermentation begins. After fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees for three months.

This Garnatxa Blanca is a young, fruity wine. It is highly aromatic with notes of melon and white fruit on the nose. On the palate, it is balanced with a medium body and a lovely crisp freshness. It pairs well with simple tapas and grilled squid. Herencia Altés Garnatxa Blanca is an excellent value.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0594/9358/0879/files/herencia-altes-garnatxa-blanca_11390.webp?v=1770195463
herencia-altes-garnatxa-negra-rose
Herència Altés Garnacha Negra Rosé
This wonderfully refreshing rosé is made from the Garnatxa Negra variety. It has a light salmon pink color thanks to its brief skin contact. A floral aroma and a fresh taste characterize this wine. We owe this wine to Nuria Altes, who, driven by her passion, launched a wonderful project. The foundation of these wines is their exceptionally high quality, and every effort is made to achieve this high standard. Only the best of the best is good enough.

Organic vineyards of Herencia Altes

The project by Catalan Nuria Altes is called Herencia Altes. She wanted to revitalize Terra Alta, which is considered a forgotten region of Catalonia. The grapes come from organic vineyards near Batea, a village that accounts for fifty percent of the total DO Terra Alta plantings. The climate is Mediterranean with a continental influence. This primarily results in cool winters, with two strong winds that cool the area during the day. This prevents the grapes from losing their acidity and allows them to ripen perfectly.

The grapes are picked earlier than for red wine, which keeps the potential alcohol level lower. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are crushed, cooled, and sent directly to the press, where they macerate on the skins under hermetic conditions for between three and eight hours. With very little color acquired, the must enters the fermentation tanks to continue its transformation into wine. The wine is aged for four months in French oak barrels to give it complexity and roundness on the palate.

What does the Herència Altés Garnatxa Negra Rose taste like?

Because the must has briefly come into contact with the berry skins, the Herència Altés Garnatxa Negra Rosat Terra Alta DO has a delicate salmon-pink color. The bouquet exudes a fruity, floral aroma of ripe raspberries, accompanied by hints of ice candy. On the palate, this Terra Alta rosé presents a wonderfully soft body alongside its delicate Grenache sweetness. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. A refreshing drink for rosé lovers.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0594/9358/0879/files/herencia-altes-garnatxa-negra-rose_11391.webp?v=1770195462
herencia-altes-garnatxa-negra
Herencia Altés Garnatxa Negra
Herencia Altés Garnatxa Negra is a red wine made by Herencia Altés in the DO Terra Alta. Although Terra Alta is not yet a well-known region, it is one of the largest wine-growing areas in Catalonia. This wine is made entirely from Garnacha Tinta grapes from vineyards in Batea, the town with over 50 percent of the DO's vineyards. The soils are rich in clay and limestone and poor in organic matter.

Ideal climate for the Garnatxa Negra

Even as a child, Núria Altés loved the late summer scents that filled her native village of Batea during the grape harvest, and so she realized her long-dormant dream of producing her own wines with growing passion, continuing her family's tradition. Batea is located in the relatively unknown region of Terra Alta in southwestern Catalonia. The vineyards are situated approximately 580 meters above sea level and are climatically influenced by continental influences. Two prevailing winds significantly impact the quality of the grapes. These are the Cerc, a colder northwesterly wind, which ensures the grapes retain their natural acidity. And the Garvi, a mild sea breeze that ensures the grapes ripen properly. These winds also prevent disease and rot in the bunches.

The vinification of Herència Altés Garnatxa Negra

The grapes for this Garnatxa Negra come from various growers in Batea, Corbera, and Bot in Terra Alta. All these grape growers are fully organic. The winemakers use minimal amounts of sulfites, which further enhances the purity of the wine. All vines are at least twelve years old and are usually bush vines on chalky soils. This age results in wines with complexity and balance. It is also important to harvest the grapes on time to keep the alcohol content within limits. The grapes are harvested manually in boxes and fermented at a controlled temperature of 23-24 degrees Celsius. Maceration then lasts six days.

Bright crimson in color, this wine is very expressive, with notes of red fruit and minerals that leap from the glass. Plenty of fruit on the palate, a touch of complexity, and sweet tannins. Pairs well with grilled meats, cabrito, and lamb.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0594/9358/0879/files/herencia-altes-garnatxa-negra_11392.webp?v=1770195464
herencia-altes-benufet
Herència Altés Benufet
Herencia Altés Benufet is a white wine produced by the Herencia Altés winery in Batea, DO Terra Alta. This led to the birth of the Herencia Altés brand. Three years later, she invested in her own small winery and acquired her first vineyard, La Serra. They currently cultivate over 60 hectares, all using organic methods. They have nine wines on the market and are currently building their new winery, which covers over 4,000m². It is located within the vineyard and is integrated into the surrounding environment.

Herencia Altés Benufet is a wine made from 100% white Grenache from the centuries-old Benufet farm, located in Serra Xalamera, on calcareous, clayey soils poor in organic matter. The grapes are harvested by hand and placed in 18-kilo boxes. The grapes are then sorted in the vineyards. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they are cooled for 24 hours at 3-5 degrees Celsius. Wild yeast fermentation takes place in a modern conical concrete tank, followed by two months of single-fermentation of the fine lees. Nuria's new project, Herencia Altes, is tucked away in a remote corner of Catalonia, outside the village of Batea, in Terra Alta, a lesser-known DO. It's remarkable that Terra Alta is one of Catalonia's largest wine-growing regions, yet one that few are aware of—something Nuria has changed. Having grown up in the vineyards tended by her grandfather, Nuria has known these vineyards since childhood. In 2010, she decided to stop selling her fruit to the local cooperative and instead make her own wines. She is supported in this project by her partner, Rafael de Haan, and together they inaugurated a new cellar for the 2016 vintage in her hometown of Batea.

Herencia Altés La Peluda is a wine made with Garnacha Peluda, a variety with a similar maturation to red Grenache, but harvested separately for this wine.
