Robertson

The Robertson Wine Region

In the south of South Africa, we find the wine region known as Robertson. It's a relatively new wine region where grapes have only been cultivated since 1983. The area lies in the Breede River Valley, one of the few places in South Africa suitable for viticulture. In South Africa, only the coastal region is suitable, as further inland it's too hot and dry to produce wine. Besides being a picturesque area with stunning scenery, it also produces some very well-known wines. Wines bearing the Robertson appellation are also produced there.

The history of the Robertson wine region

It was the Scottish pastor Dr. William Robertson who, in 1853, decided to establish a village of the same name in southern Africa. He began ostrich farming in the area, but after the First World War, grape growing took over. Robertson is the region where almost fourteen percent of South African wine is produced. The soil is rich in lime, where Burgundy grapes thrive. Consequently, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are widely planted.

The climate in Robertson

Located about 160 kilometers from Cape Town, Robertson enjoys a warm and dry climate, perfect for viticulture. The high temperatures are tempered by a cool breeze from the Indian Ocean. This ocean also provides the necessary mist, which somewhat offsets the low rainfall. This climate allows the grapes to "rest" at night. They cool down thanks to the lower temperatures, allowing them to develop and maintain a good acidity. During the day, the grapes bask in the warm rays of the sun, which create a rich flavor profile.

Wines from Robertson

Initially, the region was primarily known for its dry white Chardonnay wines. But Sauvignon Blanc wines are increasingly gaining popularity. Red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are also growing in popularity. A beautiful example of a rich white wine is the Bon Courage Estate Chardonnay Prestige Cuvée. It's this winery's best-selling wine, and for good reason. The aroma is rich and lush, with the aromas interplaying perfectly. The taste is intense and full-bodied with a broad flavor palette. We're thrilled, and once you've tasted it, you undoubtedly will be too. But you can also find red wines in the wide range of wines from the Robertson region. A particularly exclusive wine from Robertson is the Springfield Methode Acienne Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is produced according to an old Burgundian style. This Methode Ancienne Cabernet Sauvignon Springfield has a distinctly powerful flavor, filling the mouth with breadth, intense pepperiness, vanilla, leather, and blackcurrant notes, and beautiful tannins, with a delightful finish, length, and complexity. A beautiful example of one of the many wines the Robertson wine region has to offer.
