Tertiary marl and limestone characterize the soils on the south-facing slopes.

Traditional wines from Bischel

The Runkel family has been involved in winegrowing in Rheinhessen for five generations. Their experience, excellent vineyards, and the skills of Christian and Matthias Runkel contribute to the quality of their wines. Today, the Bischel winery, located in Appenheim between Bingen and Mainz, is one of the most interesting and prestigious wineries in Rheinhessen. The company boasts several vineyards in a prime location. In addition to the mountains of Gau-Algesheimer St. Laurenzikapelle, known for their calcareous soil, this also includes the vineyards on the Binger Scharlachberg and the Appenheimer Hundergulden. Here, top-quality vines grow on limestone soils.

Bischel Winery sends approximately 120,000 bottles of excellent wine worldwide each year. The main grape variety for the "Bischel Boys" is Riesling. The estate also produces excellent Silvaner, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Scheurebe, and Sauvignon Blanc. Grey Burgundy and White Burgundy are, of course, also found in the Bischel Winery's vineyards.

Handmade in the vineyard

To ensure the estate's wines retain their distinctive character, the focus is on handcrafting in the vineyards. The grapes are handled with the utmost care to ensure optimal aromatic development. Christian and Matthias Runkel ensure minimal residual sugar in their wines. The exceptionally dry wines from the Bischel winery still impress with their freshness, fruit, and fine bouquet.

This handcrafted wine results in a wonderfully fragrant Riesling with the full aroma of citrus, green apple, and peach. A refreshing, classic Riesling that opens on the palate with delicate, juicy fruit, before the perfect acidity lends it finesse and elegance.
In the Rheinhessen wine region, Bischel's old vineyards are filled with the white grape Weisser Burgunder, better known as Pinot Blanc from France. Brothers Matthias and Christian Runkel have put a lot of work into the vineyard, and this has been rewarded in recent years with excellent harvests. The white Weisser Burgunder is also one of Bischel's favorite wines and is listed among Germany's 100 best wines. This is something the brothers are proud of, and it allows them to further enhance their marketing. We've known for years that Bischel's wines are excellent, and we proudly carry the entire range.

Completely hand-harvested for this Bischel Weisser Burgunder

Wingut Bischel is located in the northern Rheinischen region, between Mainz and Bingen, in the town of Appenheim. The winery is considered one of the region's absolute rising stars. Weingut Bischel focuses on Riesling and Burgundy varieties.

The Weisser Burgunder grapes originate from the Appenheimer Eselspfad and the Gau-Algesheimer St. Laurenzikapelle. The soil there is perfect, with abundant shell limestone and loose sand ensuring vigorous vines. The steep slope faces south, and all Weisser Burgunder grapes are harvested by hand. The grapes are transported to the press in small crates, after which the beautifully rich juice is partially aged in oak barrels. This gives this white wine more depth and richness.

The smell and taste of the Bischel Weisser Burgunder

Thanks to all the effort and care, the result is stunning: this Bischel Weisser Burgunder has a refined and spicy character. A pleasant tropical aroma of pineapple tantalizes the senses, mingling with notes of caramel and honey. The palate is exquisite: a Weisser Burgunder, bursting with fruit flavors like pear and quince. A juicy finish with soft woody notes and vanilla. It pairs well with light meat dishes, especially veal.
This Grauer Burgunder is a superb white wine, produced in the beautiful Rheinhessen wine region. Bischel is now run by two young winemakers, a breath of fresh air that has further improved the wines. The Runkel family has been involved in winemaking in Rheinhessen for five generations. Their experience, excellent vineyards, and the skills of Christian and Matthias Runkel contribute to the quality of their wines.

The old vines for this Bischel Grauer Burgunder are planted in the loose sandy soils of Appenheimer Daubhaus and the limestone-dominated soils of St. Laurenzikapelle. This contributes to the production of a top-quality white wine from Grauer Burgunder.

The harvest of the Grauer Burgunder

On the steep slopes, the Grauer Burgunder grapes are still harvested by hand. Bunch by bunch is inspected to determine whether it is suitable for this top-quality wine. The yield is modest, but of such exceptional quality. It's no wonder that Bischel's harvest is praised throughout Rheinhessen. The grapes are transported in small crates like a prince. Too many clusters together would cause excessive damage, which is undesirable. The bunches are gently pressed. The juice is fermented partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in wooden barrels. The golden-yellow juice matures for several months in Bischel's beautiful wine cellars.

The smell and taste of the Bischel Grauer Burgunder

This wine is a true German delight to drink; what refinement this wine possesses, starting from the moment the cap is opened. A beautiful bouquet of ripe apples, pears, and a hint of orange. Pouring this Bischel Grauer Burgunder truly unleashes its full potential, releasing aromas of exotic fruit and a touch of red apple. The palate is rich and full-bodied, a true Grauer Burgunder! Delicious, with plenty of white fruit and beautiful nuances of herbs, orange, and citrus. It pairs wonderfully with light meat dishes or veal, but also with spicy pasta and arugula.
